i suspect it grew out of an attempt to capture some of the reverence for the winchester model 70 the "rifleman's rifle". which came along after winchester stopped naming by year. 1936 saw both the winchester model 70 and 71. and the 54 and 55 where from 1924 IIRC and in between there where at least models 60-69.

Lousy gun, terrible caliber and with that serial number on the bolt I'd be surprised if you even bring it in the house. You really should sell it to me.
