I don't think there is such a thing...

Whatever is the fastest will be the flatest ... but that has nothing to do with the best ...

For practical use there is not much sense going larger than the capacity of the .06 case. More sense staying with a 6mm Remington. I wore out a few barrels with a 6mm - 280 improved ... not much different than a .240 Weatherby. It sure was a killer though...
 
Ive had a hardon for a 6mmbr for quite a while now, and will be acquiring one sooner or later. Or, possibly a PPC; though the PPC bolt-face is unique and therefore more expensive
 
oh, and Sierra's manufacturing a new plastic-tipped 117 grainer with a .600 BC (!!!!) - it's manufactured exclusively for david tubb, and being sold under the DTAC name.

I hope this means there will be a general trend toward poly-tipped VLD bullets in the future
 
6MM BR is my hands-down favorite. Loaded with heavies and pushed hard , it is accurate to a mile - yes, a mile.

Light twist light bullets, very flat, reasonably fast, highly accurate.

It dominates at 300M ISSF matches and is a top contender at 600M F-class shoots as well

1-200 yard BR, the 6PPC is the king of the hill
 
If you are a reloader type guy, then you want a .6mm-284win. if you do not reload your own then you want a .240wby. It's that simple.

what do I need for the 6PPC or BR
and what kind of velocities am i looking at for a 115 grn tip
faster is better in my opinion
 
The 117gr DTAC are too new to know if they will stick together if pushed beyond 3100fps. The initial batch had issues.

Heavy for cal, high BC bullets will shoot the flatest at very long range. However, if only thinking 400yds, then light bullets going over 4000fps are the flatest.

You need to define your criteria more.

If you could do it, a 0.6BC 6mm bullet going 4000fps would be the flatest and maintain that performance the furthest.

My guess would be a 6mm STW should do it. Just load up 90gr of wet sawdust. It is a compressed load.

From a more practical standpoint, LR shooting is not about flat shooting per se but the maintenance of velocity. Here a high BC bullet at 3000fps is about what the bullets will tolerate.

Neither the 6BR or PPC has enough case capacity to make this happen with the heavies.

The 6XC/47L are going to be the new min case for these 115/117gr bullets at this velocity. The 243 and improved variants would be easier to get to 3000/3100fps without straining things too much.

Define your criteria better to determine "best".

35 years ago I used to regularly hunt coyotes N.W. of Calgary with another fellow. We killed a lot.

He often shot running coyotes at 300 - 350 yards with his .270 Winchester. I never saw anyone better at it. Once he nailed one at about 500 yards on the third shot ...

It doesn't need to be that flat shooting, it is going to require a big enough bullet so you will see where you hit in the snow and can correct for the next shot...

Dream on about hitting running coyotes at 700 meters... :D
 
best 6mm

If those are the criteria, try a 6 mm Rem. I shoot 105 A-Max bullets out of mine at 3200 fps at -10 degrees for coyotes. I have a 26" Gaillord barrel. Shoots very flat. Steve
 
Don't overlook the 22's, either. A 22-250 AI with a fast-twist barrel shooting bullets in the ~.5 BC range at 3500 FPS would be very hard to beat at quarter-mile ballistics

I believe that's a completely unrealistic expectation, especially if you expect to be doing it in the hellishly windy southern alberta area. Under real-world conditions, that would be no-#### world class shooting.

But, if you want to attempt it, even the 6mm's might be on the small side. There are 6.5mm bullets with bc's approaching 700, and cartridges that can launch them at 3100+ FPS
