What's the best rifle for Skunk shooting?

I helped my brother get rid of six skunks in two days by trapping them in a wire cage trap baited with a soft boiled egg. He had a long pole with a hook on the end to pick up the cage by the handle and drop the cage into a large rubbermaid bin filled with water. He also put a brick on top of the cage to complete the process. They then go into a quality garbage bag and into the dumpster.
If you are careful not to freak them out during the procedure they won't spray, just let them relax for a while after they get caught.
He also had two smart skunks that would go into the trap but not trip the gate so I dispatched them with 22CB's. They both died where they stood and didn't spray, but I think I lucked out with them.

Considering the subforum you posted in, I suggest getting a copy of "War of the Rats" and reading it cover to cover. Its a great book AND will give you all the info you need to resolve your problem. :D

Oh, and hire a lawyer! :p

Drowning them is inhumane, I don't care what anyone says. Trap them and take them further next time. Our neighbour had a family move under his shed, he just left them be, they never did any damage and moved along once the stupids in the immediate area stopped leaving garbage out.

Yep. X2. Keep them from getting into the attic and shed, and let it be. Racoons, skunks and opposums are the natural inhabitants, you are the trespasser. If they cause no damage, leave them be. If they are not offered an easy meal, they will probably move on, and a radio and motion light in their den will probably encourage them.

Same here, talked to the neighbours and they wont leave anything out anymore. No Food no skunks etc! So guys, TX for all the help, probably not the best place to post this, sorry for the interruption and carry on with other matters. Just so you can sleep tonight, the problem has or will be resolved as follows;
1-Hired another extermination company to relocate them, where? I dont care.
2-Hired another company that will come and dig a 2' trench around the shed and set a wire fence around the perimiter so they cant get back in. That should do it! and BTY it was cheaper than a Lawer:D

TX again for all your help,
best regards,
VE2

Guys, I have a family of 4 skunks under my shed. Tried everything to get rid of them, what would be the best rifle and ammo within city limits. Need serious responses DOHHHH!:HR:
I have a M14 but maybe a bit too much for those critters:runaway:

Within city limitsÉ Likely none, unless you live in Dawson City, Yt. Even then, I think they adopted bylaws prohibiting the discharging of rimless or centerfires for rodents and such within a municipal boundary unless a special licensed bylaw officer or an indoor range. Get a skunk trap. Catch it, take it out to some farm. Load shotgun. let it go...get to safe distance and blow it to smithereens.

The subject has been resolved Tx again. Shish, never knew there were so many people with interest in this subject. Guys, time to move on, no more skunks here within a day or two.
Everybody take a deep breath now, thanks again

Stay clear of the body grip traps....you might kill someone's pet by mistake and it's probably illegal anyway within city limits. I've always used mothballs to dissuade skunks, tomcats, and damn near anything else that is or is thinking of taking up residence under my shed. Just toss handfulls under....and wear gloves. You should be able to pick up a couple of boxes at your supermarket, hardware, or dollar store.

Y'know, reminds me of another solution I used for the wayward neighbourhood cats pooping in our flowerbeds and annoying our (indoor) house cat.

Buy those cheap mouse snap traps...about 10 to 20, depending on the area. scuff up the dirt/sand a bit and set them in. set the trap and gently put debris, grass blades, sand, etc over the traps. One night, had eight of them go off. In a few weeks....no more disturbances and deposits. Has been good now for two years. I imagine it would work for the skunk, other than it jettisoning that foul spray when the trap goes off.
