What's the best varmit gun available? I have a budget, so I'm not interested in a $2,000 rifle. I'm going to use it for fox and maybe coyote and wolf. I have a .22lr Erma Werke M1 replica rifle but it's probably not good for fox over 75 yards...........

So, what rifle would you suggest and how much do they go for?

Thanks for the help!

You gotta spend some $$$ to get decent rifle/scope combo. Usually works like with everything else, more you spend more you get.
My recommendation will be 6.5x55 Swede with good 4-16x scope you can shoot easy up to 500m.
Good Luck

though im waiting for someone to post that they shot a wolf with a .17hmr

I talked and fished with a trapper/commercial fisherman, while doing some research in Northwest Sask, who told me he shot a wolf with his NEF .17HMR...
He said he shot it in the lungs and it went a ways, but died.

Budget Varmint Set Up

Stevens 200 Rifle in .223, 22-250, .243, Bushnell 3200 Elite 3 x 9 x 40.
Rifle 370.00
Scope 280.00
Rings & Bases 60.00

My nephew has this set up in 25-06 and for the money it's a very good shooter.

Another fella from sudbury, welcome to CGN!

Do you reload? Want to keep hides? Budget? What experience do you have thus far? Preference between old and new? action? wood vs synthetic?

Well a few years back in Saskatchewan, a gunless friend borrowed my .22 LR Winchester semi auto Model 490 rifle for some varmint problems on a nearby farm.
He did find the errant fox that was raiding the chicken coop. Too boot the red fox was asleep curled up in the driving rain.
The friend opened fire and used CCI Stingers. Of the four shots that riddled said fox, he believes the third or fourth shot actually killed it at 35 yards or so. He was lined up on it's head, when it stirred and tried to rise up.
Not an ideal tool for this job. Any .22 centrefire is a better choice. The .223 Remington is ideal for this, I think so myself.

22-250 will give you some pretty good range, as for a good cheap setup a nef handirifle with scope. I have a 22-250 with B.S.A hunstsman 6-18x scope paid $429.00 all said and done for the setup.

since you mentioned budget, id be tempted to try one of the new Marlin XS7s, with as good glass as you can afford on it.

.223 if you dont reload and want widely available inexpensive ammo, .25-06 if you reload or dont mind spending nearly $30 for a box of factory ammo.

yep picked up a stevens 200 in 22-250 put leopld rings and bases and a tasco 6-24 varmint scope on it and this shoots .5 inch groups at 100 yards
