What's the best varmit gun?

Are you OK?

X2 22-250

I have a huge love on for the 22-250. I purchased a Savage 12 BVSS with a 26" - 1" non fluted heavy barrel from another member of this site to replace my M77 223. I did an Accu-glass bedding job and lowered the Accu-trigger to about 2.5 Lbs. Added a Harris swivel 6-9 and a Leupold VX-L 6.5-20 X 56 Extreme Varminter and Burris mounting hardware and I ended up with the critter killer of my dreams.
With factory Winchester 45 JHPs I was able to keep them inside 2" at 200. I have big hopes with working up a load for this one.
Here she is. I don't think you would be disappointed with a 22-250.

That VX-L puts it out of most people's price range, including this guy's if he "doesn't want to spend $2000 on a gun"... although I really like your choice of setup, as I use a VX-L on my big game rifle and LOVE it.

I suggest that the Marlin XL7 is the way to go as has been mentioned before. I've been hearing that it's a great gun for the money, but haven't seen one shoot yet. Adjustable trigger on it is a nice bonus too that you won't get on the Stevens 200.
25-06 sounds like a winner to me, or even 243 or 7mm-08 if you'd like a short action instead on the XS7.
My varmint gun is in 223, and it works great, but if I could go back in time and do it again I would have gone with one of the calibers I recommended just because you can hunt big game with it too if you feel the need, but here in AB, my 223 is limited to varmints only. :(

I have to agree with the guys about the savage rifles. I don`t own any but i have sighted in 3 last fall and was very impressed with how they perform for the price. These were the package rifles with scope, poor optic but will get you started.

Not too many gofer fields in sudbury is there???

You are getting answers to buy a varmint gun with a heavy barrel and bipod setup.

My guess for wolves and yotes you will be in and out of trucks, on and off of quads and sno machines, and walking.

You have got some good advice in buy used and get good glass.
Damn good points, I never considered that. I am so used to laying in quarter sections in Alberta and Saskatchewan and picking off multiple targets that I guess I assumed everyone enjoyed the same luxury. I don't consider a heavy rifle like mine to be a good truck or carry rifle.
I still think a 22-250 is a great caliber for the rodents and coyote. I have never taken a wolf so I have no input on that one.

You guys pick the budget gun. Put a Leupy on it! I vote for 243 or 6mm for cal for doing that job. But what do I know, I don't do it.............. They look too much like doggy's to me and "if" they ain't doing any harm....... Well, I just couldn't do it. ;)
Place your shots well.
