Someone I know is interested in owning an SKS rifle. My only experience is with a russian one from ten years ago...more that that even.

Of what's available in Canada now, or should be in the next couple of months, what is the best gun for the money?

Maybe a Lever Simonov + 1120 case for $350?

I am also interested.

I wanted to buy a Russian SKS, but I remember reading somewhere that the chambers were stamped internally in order to ID the brass (or something stupid like that)... am I reading internet crap on this?

Anyway, what is the nicest SKS one can buy today in Canada from a dealer?
What is the cheapest SKS one can buy in Canada from a dealer?

You can't go wrong with the Lever Combo. I just opened my crate and you never realize how much 1120 rounds is until you're looking right at it. I'm sure if you take a look at the "70,000 sks" thread you might find a hint to when or if there will be better deals coming in the near future...

The deal Lever has is pretty good, I got mine a week or two before that deal and still think $400 was a good deal.
As for the ammo it's kind of scary how much is really in the case, with the 5 round limits as well it lasts a long time.

:agree:
If you are looking for a nice one & something like all matching number's or a silver bolt contact Trade Ex.

Stamped chambers? Whewwwww that's a new one.

1120 rounds and a refurbed rifle for $350 is as good as it's going to get. Are you going to procrastinate forever over $20?

If it was for me I would have pulled the trigger immediately on the deal...being for someone else I feel obligated to find the BEST deal! But Lever is local to me and I can't see doing much better than that.

I have a vague memory of what it was like to be impressed with a thousand rounds of ammo...but that was many thousands of rounds ago! Buy it cheap, stack it deep...nowadays if I had a thousand rounds per gun I would be near panic stage. My goal would be something closer to ten crates per gun than one crate per gun but that's just me.

But it's a good start for someone without a serious ammo stockpile. That is the situation of the person I am shopping for...probably not more than five thousand rounds of ammo in his whole house, including rimfire. And centerfire rifle...this would probably double his collection in one box (he mostly shoots .30-06 and .308 and would only have a few hundred of each, I guess).

Only the converted ones sold to civilians in Russia have the decoder pin installed. This allows them to id the gun if needed later on.

russian gun laws are pretty strict but i dont think its the chamber they tampered with , i recall a russian member saying that they have to drive a pin to the bore , protruding enuff to scratch the bullet so the authorities could trace the bullet with what they have on file .

this isnt apply to russian SKS exported.

Best price on Russian SKS currently is Moving Target.

And besides bayonets they limit rear sights to 300 meters. However, you are allowed to buy any kind of AK and SVD variants there and use it for hunting with 10 rd mags.

SKS accuracy beyond 300 yds is mostly wishful thinking. Hey does anyone know how to bump-fire an SKS without eating the empties?

The lever Crate of 10 works out to be the best deal. Just did one, shipped to Ontario no less and still only paid aabout 220 after shipping and tax per gun. for those of you in BC it'd be less than 200 per rifle. great deal for a great rifle.
