I've been seeing a lot of threads/comments recently of users asking/wondering if 'firearm X will be available in .300 blackout?'

What's so special about .300 Blackout? It just seems like yet another 30cal cartridge...

Same rim size as .223 so can be used on AR platforms, subsonic sniper capability esp. when equipped with suppressor, uses very long, efficient bullets, very low recoil so user can spot shot placement, etc.

Google is your friend.

With light bullets, it gives 7.62x39 performance from an AR type carbine. If anyone has use for something like this.
With heavy bullet subsonic loads, a suppressed carbine would be utterly uberkewl for someone with the proper prohibited papers.

I did google it. Wikipedia was blantantly unhelpful.

And thanks for answering my question.

300 AAC Blackout is the answer to AK ballistics in an AR platform.

Same bolt, same magazine, re-shaped .223 casing. All you need is a new barrel.

I wish it was available in Canada. I would start a 300 upper build tomorrow. :(

Replicates 7.62x39 performance out of an AR? Create a new cartridge to do that?

It feed very well from an M4 and it makes IPSC rifle Major power factor.
minimum power factor for Major 320
minimum power factor for Minor 150

Power factor = ( weight in grains * velocity feet/second ) / 1000

ex:
1 - 223 Rem 55gr at 3200fps = 55 * 3200 / 100 = 176 Minor power factor
2 - 300 AAC Blackout 155gr at 2075fps = 155 * 2075 / 100 = 321 Major power factor (this is a hot load).

If you want Major power factor from an AR, it's the way to go.

Like the Whisper, barrels are usually fast twist so that you can use, 240 gr. very long bullets, so after about 100 yds. it would have it all over the X39.

Well, kinda yea:

7.62x39 is too tapered to feed well in AR magazines, notice that an AK-47 magazine is much more "curved" than any M-16 magazine. Stuffing the one in the other would lead to problems.

The other factor is quality of bullets: most 7/62x39 is of low quality projectiles and components. Yes, you can get better. But even quality projectiles that have modern expansion like round nose, ballistic tip, hollow points, are almost unavailable to that cartridge of .311 diameter. BUT... the .300blackout is a standard .30 caliber projectile, for which there are hundreds of different quality projectiles of all shapes and sizes.

So really it comes down to feeding in large cap AR mags, and wide selection of projectiles.

All of the above, however in addition the Blackout loses less performance-wise as the barrel length decreases making it pretty much ideal for use in shorter barrels (8-11") - awesome PDW-ness...

I think that the 300 Blackout would be very interesting if we could have it as it was intended, in an AR15 that is not restricted in any way and with a suppressor or silencer. In Canada, not so interesting to shoot on the range without a can on the end of the barrel.

Even without a can, subsonics produce a fair bit less noise than a full power 556, especially out of a shirt barrel. My Whispers never fail to attract attention when firing them on the range.

Guys always want to know what it is that is making so much less noise out of a shorty AR.
