What's the deal with Lefties !

I'm a southpaw, I have shot right handed rifles all my life, I can shoot from the right shoulder if needed but I haven't had any problems with shooting right handed guns left. Only guns I cant shoot left would be the obvious righthanded bullpups, and the only guns that even remotely caused problems was fast firing a .22 which would spit, and a full auto chinese ak for the same reason which thanks to our gov't I don't ever have to worry about owning lol.

well, I've got a double dose- left eye dominant and left hand- the only question I have is WHO THE HELL DECIDED THE ONLY ACTION was BOLT?- once that b/s is out of the way and you don't park your face on the neck, but back centred on the cheekpiece where it's SUPPOSED to be, I don't have any issue with flying brass in front of my nose- because it's back 4 inches from the port - most of the southpaws that have this problem have POOR STANCE or shooting position- of course, I problems with some of the bullpups as well, plus they're too ( notice the correct spelling) damned short

I shoot left, the only guns I have a problem with are right handed semi's. The ejection of gases and sound are very close to my right ear. I always plug and muff, but I'm sure if I ever get a range membership and shoot regularly I'd suffer some hearing loss in that ear if I stuck to semi's.
I did pick up an old remington model 29 shotgun which has a bottom eject, but all my guns are right.
I need to get a set of custom ear plugs, especially when I get an AR.

As a lefty I get great entertainment out of righties trying to run my left hand bolt... Welcome to my world lol. I am fine with most types of guns , right hand bolts with iron sights or scout mounted optics are pretty good , right handed bolt guns with traditionally mounted scopes are really just single shots with a convenient spot to carry extra rounds . After years of sticking with levers and dealing with right hand bolts finally getting a left hand bolt is sweet . I was suprised how fast you can run a bolt gun if it is proper handed for the person .
Yeah, watching righties trying to do left handed things is pretty priceless. Us lefties have lived an entire life of compromise and improvisation (probably why we live an average of 7 years less than righties...). I had nothing but right handed guns, until I purchased a Savage Mark II in left hand. I love that thing. And Canuck Bob is spot on, my go to hunting rifle is a Savage 99 in .308, I love it. It seems I'm starting to amass a collection of Savages, my dad said I could have his old Savage pump action 12 gauge as well...

Lefties here as well have all right handed guns never been a problem, learned early to deal with it remember the first shot is the one that counts after that all you are doing is spraying and praying. but remember left handed people use the right side of their brain and right handed people use the wrong side!

Are we like the outcasts of the shooting world ? I'm a lefty shooting right hand guns. I recently contacted Weatherby about a possible left hand model in their Vangaurd 2 since my right hand .243 shoots 58gr hornady rounds sub moa, which is great off the bench or a standing coyote(i use shooting sticks to cycle rounds). The response was tooling costs. Yaaah! So you go through all that trouble to improve on the vanguard (koodos to you) and take your slice out of the working mans gun market but forget us lefties. I looked through a copy of a 2010 Savage catalogue and found several models in left. Even if some are since discontinued , i know they still make a few models. What about tooling costs? Now enter the economically priced Ruger American and Remington 783. I already have enough rapped up in my TC venture in .22/.250 and the Vanguard. I need to know if Remington or Ruger are making those in left for 2014 . I've also considered going to the Savage 11 XP trophy hunter in .243 . I heard the gun is not bad(what ever that means) but that weaver scope sucks. I'm also hearing local prices in Ontario, Canada are going up to the $650 range. What is the twist rate on the savage and has anyone put those Hornady's thru their gun with sub moa success? I know a few guys that i hunt with for coyotes that have more expensive guns in .243 win., that can't shoot bullets under 75gr.You can tell by the amount of general inquiries on this sight that i'm definitely not alone in my search. This is not about bragging rights over this or that. I did my research on these guns and it paid off for me. If anyone can honestly suggest a left hand model for 2013/14 that will give the same results for $500 or less regardless of brand, i'd greatly appreciate it. P.S. I would have considered older guns in .243 cal or a 6mm rem. But it's just as hard to find lefts in good shape at those prices.
there are left hand models from other manufacturers but if it has to be at an entry lever rifle price point your choices are limited

I'm right handed but shoot left handed due to loosing sight in my right eye. If you are patient you can find some good deals on left handed firearms. I really like my three Browning Abolts but my favourite is my Remington BDL. Have Winchester and Savage in lefties as well but they don't seem to fit me as well. Remember your parents saying don't play with pellet guns...someone could lose an eye. Apparently it's true.

"One could learn to shoot right handed. "

you try doing something with the other hand and see how well it works donkey :)

I agree, i play all sports right handed, but i write and eat and play guitar and shoot left handed. I have an SKS right now and with that ejecting forward and to the right it isnt a problem, but i held a t97 right handed up and there is now friggen way i could own one. Craps deal for lefties but we need to find what will work best. I actually prefer to cycle the bolt of a right handed rifle with my right hand and hold with my left. Wierd, maybe just the way i have done it all my life.

I'm a left hand left eye dom and I've adapted to just make do with MOST firearms, Tavor with right hand bolt tho I just did it right hand right eye tho, little off on the sights but still made it work.

Upside to shooting a right handled bolt action with your left hand, if you have a bipod you never have to lose your grip an can be back on the trigger instantly.

If you don't find the rifles weight an issue you don't need the bipod either just leave it in the shoulder ready to go.

More and more firearms are being made in south paw versions but it is still a problem as the are still more lefties then rifles made for them. I am a forced right with dominant naturally right eye so shooting right handed in not a problem and old fiend of mine is a natural right but he sees best out of his left eye and has learned using a bolt action shot left feels best for him... its more of finding your zen...

Zastava 300 win, tikka 6.5, savage 220 and savage trophy hunter 22 250. All left hand. 6.5x55 was tough to find but they are out there. For shotguns sx3 with safety revered and mossberg 930 with a tang safety.

For lefties most righty guns are easier and faster to use. Not to mention righty guns are cheaper, are every where and parts are stocked in most places.

I use to shoot right, then had an eye injury (25 year ago) that forced me to switch. ruger no1, tikka t3 lefty, main hunting rifles now. the semi autos work ok too (probably not the safest), oh ya and the old double barrel and single 410 are fine too. I still shoot pistol right though, just feels very odd holding them left. Never could get the my self trained with a left bow.
One could learn to shoot right handed. ;)

I am a lefty that prefers right handed bolt actions but I own both left and right.

Using a right handed bolt action is far superior to the left versions, I work the bolt by taking my right hand off the for end this leaves the gun firmly planted in my shoulder. Its a way better set up, also the safety is much better as it is on the correct (thumb) side, not to mention the port is on the correct side making it easy to see what is going on in there. The biggest problem is that should a case every blow you could get a bad blast of particulate and gas due to your face being on the port side, this is one of the main reasons I like Remington's as the case is fully supported and has a gas seal on all sides.

Also love right handed shotguns, port and bolt release on my Mossberg were meant for lefties, LOL

After using left and right handed guns both ways (I can shoot left handed guns right handed as well.... just to confuse things!) it becomes obvious that most guns were actually built backwards!!! and work better when you turn everything around!!!
