What's the deal with Leupold?

If everyone agrees that Leupold scopes are overpriced by hundreds of dollars than why to people continue to buy Leupold? To me, buying a product is like offering a reward for a job well done and to me, it encourages that company to keep on doing an excellent job. If people continue to buy overpriced Leopold's than why would Leupold even try to be competitive. You DO NOT have to reward bad behaviour.

I can buy a 66oz bottle of Vodka for $16 in the US, but up here the same bottle is $56.

Leupold is just one company and one example...If you want to save some $$, buy a Chinese scope and keep returning it...

I would suggest to the original question, buy two cheap scopes for the same price, when they have both failed buy a leupold in canada for an inflated amount, and then if you need service work done on that leupold @ korth and it is back to you repaired/ modified in a week then you will probable not question the price difference. Or buy a ziess, only question is how long is it before you get it back from repair?

As much as I wish they were priced lower, they are obviously selling enough to justify the price. Whether its accurate or not, I have great faith in the Leupold products holding up. Just bought another, and installed it on my m14. I went Leupold because of the abuse the scope will take, and the warranty.

Canada

Happens in most business lines in Canada as it has already been mentioned this is a much smaller market. Costs more to do business here. Have to pay brokerage on border crossings, Itar paperwork and licences, staff in Canada, a building, overhead and insurance and don't forget the factory warrenty technician needs to be paid as well.
Check most any US company price for an identical items, Toys are Us US has same toy for $30. which is $55. in Canada.
Cost of doing business here and we get really good service and value for our money.

There's also the fact that businesses cost more to operate in Canada, so a greater margin is required to operate profitably. Remember, Korth is a business, and they're in this to make money. Nothing wrong with that.

Also think that there is an extra "level" that the scopes have to go through by Korth being the exclusive distributor. On certain products, stores like Cabelas Canada can import them directly from the U.S. without the need of going through a Canadian distributor. This helps keep costs much closer to U.S. retail prices. So it's not Korths "greed", but the distribution system chosen by Leupold, and the necessity to buy them from Korth.

I fully understand the extra expenses of running a business in Canada compared to the U.S, the greed part I am referring to is the retailers playing only one side of the fence when it comes to the value of our dollar. The day I see them adjusting their pricing when our Canadian dollar increases I will stop complaining. Only a select few have passed on the savings to us since our dollar has been at parity, a very select few, and hats off to them.

Looks like Korth has already won. Lots of people seem content to make up excuses for Korth and accept the inflated prices without question. I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation why only Korth/Leupold have such higher operating costs in Canada unlike similar products such as Zeiss do not.

For what its worth, I have more Leupold scopes then any other scope. I grudingly pay the ransom $ to Korth for Leupold scopes because they are only scope I will run on my big game rifles and other then breaking the law I have no choice.

Having seen Korth's wholesale prices the cost to the Canadian retailers is often higher than US retail. Don't know the reason just how things are. Regarding Zeiss I'm not sure offhand where they're based outa but if the scopes are imported from any country other than the states that would make things easier/keep relative costs down.

Zeiss is based in Germany

Thanks I was pretty confident they weren't American based. I'm betting that might be why US to Canada prices would be alot more realistic. I dislike the inflated Leupold prices just as much as anyone, but the stupid export laws just make alot of things a pain in the ass when it's coming across that border.
