I tried a search, but holy smash what a ton of posts; after all that I didn't find a specific description of the problem...

What is it about Swiss Arms rifles that causes the brass to be unusable after firing?

It's not unusable after firing. The neck is dented, but nothing the resizing die can't fix. Granted, you may not get 6-7 firings out of a case, but it doesn't make them unusable.

It's just the angle it's thrown out at - it strikes the receiver just behind the ejection port.

LOL... even reaming the primer pocket in GMM brass is too much of a pain in the ass for me... I don't blame you for not bothering with a crimp.

Velcro will help. As for the dent pattern, basically the same as what you see with lots of AKs. The brass is reusable, you just aren't going to get as many loadings out of it due to the extra working the brass around the neck gets.

I reload the brass from my swiss. Never have had any problems, in fact the dent left on the head by the ejector is a great way of keeping track of how many firings I have on the brass.
Brass from the swiss seems to last just as long as brass from an AR. Just as long as you can live with a few cosmetic dents.

I've found the same thing on my Mini-14. The dent does size out though and I can get 6-9 reloads from Lake City Brass. You only have to ream or swage the Primer pocket once. Then its worthwhile to relaod it.

If you are free Monday next week I can take my Swiss arms carbine out and we can test it to see what it does to brass. I might be able to bring a couple other rare toys too.

You bet! PM incoming.

As for the rest; it doesn't sound nearly as serious as I'd thought.

In terms of reloading for the Swiss Arms rifle...basically finding the damn brass is your biggest issue! They throw brass like an SOB and God help you if it is into tall grass or brush!

I have seen a SG550 brass catcher for sale one time in the US. Black plastic box that fit over the ejection port and did not interfere with the cocking handle movement. Should have bought it because I have not seen anything like that since. I have been to service rifle match competitions where it is not possible to go hunting for your brass afterwards.

Surplus lake city.
