Whats the deal with the 10/22

they are definitely brick eaters!! never once had a jamb, 25 rd mags, small enough for the youngsters easy to take apart to clean ... so I went out and got a SR22

Just my own personal thoughts:

The 10/22 is affordable. It is reliable. It allows for customizations and lots of them. Consider it like the Honda Civic of guns. Economy priced, reliable, can upgrade it with a widely available array of accessories (if you wish), and while accuracy is good but not great, what other gun can you guy (aside from a Rem 597, etc.) that you can get stuff like a Butler Creek 25-round mag for it? Ammo is cheap and the rifle doesn't require copious amounts of maintenance.

WTF!?! Don't EVER insult my gun like that.

Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: Now That's a Tactical .22!

Make your 10/22 into an M4. Yes, there's been attempts at that already but I think the new Troy T-22 10/22 "Sport" Chassis is the best I've seen. Features are impressive: super lightweight (someone's paying attention), trim handguard ala TRX, positionable rails, integrated flip-up sights, no flex (unlike some polymer options), single point sling attachment, and it takes AR-15 handgrips and buttstocks. The only detectable downside is the cost: it's up there at around $300 retail. I suspect it will come out in desert tan colors as well as it takes off. Unlike the heavy 6.5 lb Ruger SR-22, the Troy T-22 gets the M4 mimicry correct and fulfills all the requirements for the Tactical .22 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3wKO4... ). TNPr James does a great job at hosting this Nutnfancy visit to Troy as we hit the details on the Troy lineup. The new Troy Alpha Battlerail is an upgraded TRX that fixes some of the strength issues they've identified. As I said in SHOT 2010, the TRX sets the industry standard in thinness, lightweight, and pointability and remains a competitor favorite. The VTAC version is similiar with elongated slots; I prefer the standard Troy with the circle milling. Battlerails and integrated chassis are also available for some surprising guns like the VZ-58 (shown, also DPMS LR-308, Mini-14 MCS, all xlnt but $$) and probably more will come out. Along with some sling and muzzle device discussion, we take a look at the Troy Ruger 22/45 Tactical ("Troy Mark III Covert Approach Pistol"), integrally suppressed with red dot, rail, and muzzle glass/bad guy breaker. As usual the lighting sucks at SHOT so my trust Preon 2 does the lighting duties as we take closer looks (and it does a good job surprisingly!). Troy flip up Battlesights remain impressive and more versions are available in different heights. Like most of the Troy stuff they're tough, super lightweight, reliable, and are compact. If you can afford the cost, Troy remains some of the best accessories and upgrades for your rifle in the world, flat out. Great job James on the details!

I have 2. I have an old 1980 basic carbine that is accurate to 1.25" at 100 yards. I have a new stainless version with some plastic parts. I haven't shot it yet so I can't comment on the accuracy or reliability of the newer one. My first thought is "WHY"? My second thought is "I will never sell the old one"! I guess it was an economic decision. Its sad to see a great product get downgraded to "OK" for the sake of competing with cheap junk.

The 10/22. I don't own one, have never shot one, but they are WAY Better than my 597, which is the biggest piece of #### of a rifle ever made. (There is NO way that the 10/22 could by worse than the 597, it is not possible to be a bigger piece of #### than a piece of ####. ) I, too, will be buying a 10/22 right away!

I have bought & sold many .22 rimfire rifles. However I have had my 10/22 longer than most of my collection. It wears a Green Mtn barrel & has had various trigger & action mods. It is not as accurate as my Anschutz's or the Martini International but it is a fun little gun that has enough accuracy at 100m to keep me entertained.

So, what do you really think of your 597? :p

I have never shot one of these, but every thread about what 22 to get there is always over half say get the 10/22. What is so great bout the ruger? Just askin cuz i dont know, not to be an ass

They are attractive to the younger person just getting into shooting. It goes pop pop pop fast, and does not cost too much (until you start to get into customizing it to get some accuracy). More experienced/older gunnutz are more likely to go with a good bolt gun like the Savage. Still not too expensive but usually very accurate right out of the box. A bolt gun is going to shoot the target ammo which is more accurate reliably, where as a semi may not.

If one is going to buy a semi, it is probably one of better choices, and certainly much better than the Remington 597...

Own 3 10/22's right now. will be buying a SR-22, a AR-15 looking 10/22 some time this year. The 10/22 parts bin is around world wide. It's like looking for AA batterys, find it every where.

I've had several 10/22's, the best and the one I'll never sell belonged to my Dad who bought it when they came out in the 60's. That thing has killed more vermin and critters than you could possibly count. I keep it clean and lubed and have never replaced one part on it. I don't fire it much now as I have many others and I'm more into accuracy than rapid fire, I can see my new CZ being the front runner there, but for all out fun and ease , yep the ruger is a nice unit!

Good to see some positive posts on the poor old 10/22.:) They are like pickup trucks on the Prairies. Everywhere you look, there are 10/22's. I have a totally unaltered stainless wood-stocked one that I bought in about 1997 or so. I have a Bushnell scope on it (I forget the model) and use a mixed bag of magazines and ammo to fend off gopher attacks at Gopherxs' place.

I clean it once in a while, as it will get persnickety when dirty.

** I did get a friend to alter the bolt closing setup. It now works like it should.**

It seems to work with the mags I use, Butler Creek and Ram Line, and a couple of other oddball mags. It is simple to take down and clean, and doesn't seem to mind what ammo I use. Obviously, I like mine.:p
