^where is the mag support?
the mag is just 'free-floating'????? are they trying to shave costs or something? why would they take away the mag support?

looks hideous too in my opinion. probably cost saving measure. I think the barrel is fixed too for the defense model so they figured there's no point of having the barrel ring/mag support.
 
Maybe the white glow is some kinda containment field? :D

Ithaca's been around long enough they should know better. Rack that pump a few thousand times and see how well it's still attached to the receiver. Any metal they put there to beef up the structure could have been better used in a mag support IMO.

Old M&P Ithacas typically didn't have checkering. The ones that did had ugly pressed checkering.

I'm guessing that the Defense model is based on the Deerslayer, which does have a fixed, free floating barrel. I don't see the point, seeing as nobody would be able to take advantage of any potential improvement in slug accuracy with a bead sight.

The 8 shot version does at least have a supported magazine tube.

Why can't they just copy a good thing instead of lousing it up?
 
Plus the finish isn't Parkerizing but "Perma-Guard", a sprayed-on affair that sounds like its nowhere near as good as Duracoat and similar products.

Hopefully they offer traditional M&P and DSPS style guns at some point.

IMHO the new version is far cheaper/wimpier looking than the classic ones. if i didnt know any better (the pic is from the Ithaca site) id think they were Chinese copies.
 
The only 'good' feature I hear, is the barrel is slightly heavier, this will help absorb recoil forces.
It is a mystery to myself, why they did not add rifle style sights, on the defence model, for slug shooting?
Oh yeah! They have another model for that only.......($$$$)

Poor ole Ithaca, one can forget about a newly made Ithaca Deerslayer Police Special!
 
I have one of the new 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 shotguns.Great shotgun.It has the mag support.From what I have seen and heard of the new Ithacas the 28 gauge ,Featherlite and Ultralite shotguns have the mag support while the deerslayer and defence models do not.

Most likely has to do with the 28 gauge,Featherlite and Ultralite models having take down barrels while the other models have fixed barrels.

I'm not sure if the heavier barrels are really a good thing.

Anyway I'm pretty sure you could custom order a Defence with rifle sights, but they aren't going to offer a real DSPS type gun until enough people pester them.

I have one

I just picked up a new 20 inch defence model.Its very well made, and i do mean very well!!! Awesome fit and finish, cool walnut, metal work is the best.I bought it based on the reports, all glowing, only $549 and it slam fires with the pump just like the old ones!!!
