between an Enfield no.1 buttstock and a no.4 buttstock? Are they interchangeable?

short answer - nope.

The way they fit in the receiver socket is different, plus the shape / size of the rear side is different (different butt plate).

in a pinch one can be made to fit the other, but as Lou says, there are differences.

The safety cutout on the No. I is different. There are at least two patterns of butt socket recess used in No. 4s. As mentionned, adaptation is possible, but the stocks are not directly interchangable.

You generally have to use a No.4 buttplate as well, as they rarely fit well otherwise.
