What's the Difference...870 Express/Sportsman/Wingmaster

It is pretty simple. If you want a gun that is going to outlive you, increase in value and work for generations save and buy a wingmaster if not buy an express or sportsman's field. They will go bang also and do the job but will not have any collector value or increase in value for resale and they may have to be worked/ polished to get them to work smoothly.. On the other issue
which had been debated amoung car owners forever

I have a nice old Wingmaster however I would also like to suggest say 1975 Ithaca 20g featherlite. Both will be enjoyed by your son and maybe his son or dad.

The Wingmaster is the first gun I ever owned and is a wonderful shotgun. Worth every penny.

Express is just a cheaper 870, so it comes with all the downgrades you would expect.

"...What's the Difference..." Primarily the fit and finish plus the quality of the stock wood.
You might want to consider a Mossberg 20 ga, 3", M500 Combo. Gives you a 26" or 28", vent rib, ported, bird barrel and a 24", ported, rifled barrel. Epps wants $468.75 for it.
"...or a 60's 427 impala..." There's a 455 Cutlass (don't know what year, 70 something I think) at a dealer down the road from me. Red with a black roof. Gas stations are lined up waiting for it. snicker.
