What's the difference flash hiders

I don't know how to post pics but I'll try to describe the 2 flash hiders I've got.

One is your standard hider with 5 slots cut in it over about half the circumstance and solid the remaining.

Second has no slot, solid all the way around, the front/face has obviously a hole for projectile but it also has 6 more holes around that.

What's the difference in function between the two?

Second one sounds like a linear compensator. They direct blast/concussion forward away from the shooter. They don't necessarily function as a flash hider.
 
Most of the difference comes down to what direction and how much gas is being directed behind the bullet.

Cone with ports all around (A1)? Pretty neutral, with okay flash suppression.

Enclosed with large side ports (most brakes)? Shoots flat with reduced recoil, and some decent flash.

Solid all the way around, but ported around the front of muzzle (linear comp)? Recoil is transfered straight back, and regular small flash.
