That bcl at 12.5" barrel will have a fireball and be so loud you will be flinching.
buy whatever gun you want, toss on a muzzlebrake and always wear ear pro. And as you already know based on your observation of the previous buttstock, invest in a good buttpad. Limbsavers are quite nice and tame even the most harshest 223.

A rifle that fits you won't recoil as bad either.

Get the Sig Cross, put a Cadex MX1 on it and forget that recoil existed. With that said, invest in hearing protection as you'll need it indoors

There is factory 125gr ammo available for the 308W. The lighter the bullet, the less recoil it will generate.

i reloaded my partners 308 with 38gr varget with 150gr projecties for around 2200fps in 22 incher..... we moved her up to 40 grains now an she notices the oompher... 2400fps chorno'd.
but thats good enough for 200m deer on the regular, an no reason a tad further but she wont take a crack at any ol deer beyond 200m

I'd suggest to find a friend who reloads .308 and work up some loads with them. Lots of options. H4895 can be used in reduced loads per Hodgdon. Get some 110gn 30 Carbine bullets and you can load up some very light plinkers a kid would enjoy. I do this for the kids so they can shoot the '94 30-30 and not be afraid as the kick with a normal load is stout for such a light gun. I could shoot one off my chin...
