What's the minimum barrel length you can have for a NON-RESTRICTED PG 870?

I am basically asking what the smallest barrel you can have on a pistol gripped Rem 870 and it still be non restricted? Does the dimensions of the pistol grip factor into it? If so, factor it as a Speedfeed synthetic pistol grip. It is for a bear gun build. Please-no rants on full stocks being better. I have a full stock that will be on it from time to time, so the point is moot. Just looking for facts. Thanks in advance.

Hook your tape measure on the back of the stock. Run foreward until you pass 26". Measure the barrel.
Remember that you cannot cut a barrel to less than 18".

depends on the exact pistol grip.
AFAIK with some of the shorter pistol grips youre looking at a 16" barrel minimum (and there is a fiasco with 16" barrels so you might even have to go to 18").
with a longer one like the Knoxx Breacher you may be able to get away with 12.5-14". remember that you can also add a sling adapter for another 1/4" or so of length.

just remember that the OAL is not measured 'tip to tip', but inline with the bore.

thanks gentlemen, i was looking to use a factory barrel, most likely 14", set up for chokes, so now I have to start measuring. Does anyone have a 14" 870 they can measure from tip to rear end of reciever? I'm doing the research before I pick up most of the components so I only buy what I need.

I can measure mine tonight and let you know.

How many times does this topic have to be rehashed . If it is non factory oal 26 3/4'' and bbl has to be 18''

Cool your jets, he knows that 26" is the minimum and that the barrel has to be manufactured at the short length, not altered. He wants to know which barrel to buy in order to achieve a legal OAL without buying a pile of extra parts that he doesn't need. The limit is 26" too, not 26.75".

To the OP, my 2-3/4" Wingmaster measures 25.75" from the muzzle to the back edge of the receiver with an 18.5" barrel. Subtract 4.5" and you have 21.25" for a 14" barrel. Add on whatever you have for the pistol grip to see if you are over the 26" limit. I would guess that you will need a 16" barrel

If you read the thread, I specified "factory" barrel, and I asked specifically about the 870. I know the law. I was asking the dimensions of equipment that I haven't bought yet, so I don't have to spend the money to find out. Also, I will continue to ask questions for which I don't have answers for, despite who has asked them before me. Just who I am.

Thanks for the input gents, I now know I need a 5" PG or grip/ spacer combo for an 870/ 14" barrel. Time to shop for grips.
Thanks again, especially to the dudes doing the measuring and other legwork.
Cheers

with the knoxx breacher pistol grip and a 14 inch barrel you're 1/2 inch over the 26 inches.

is that with, or without measuring the sling stud at the back of the grip? :D

one thing that always worries me about the Knoxx stocks is the fact that they telescope an inch or so under recoil: i would not be surprised if there are cops out there that would compress the stock an inch just to get a measurement thats under OAL....then youd be #%@$ed, to put it mildly.

At the risk of derailing this thread.......I have an 18.5" barreled 870 with a pistol grip on it, and it's mighty short already. I honestly don't see the need to push the envelope with a 14" barrel with the breacher to barely make the 26" OAL length requirement just to make it the 2 inches or so over all shorter. It's not really going to make the huge difference whether you carry it in the bush or have it sitting in the safe or taking it to the range. But to each their own.

Shorty

Does anyone have a Speedfeed pistol grip they can measure and tell me the length? As for the of the FACTORY barrel, I'm simply weighing my options, 14" or 18.5".

If any cop is standing on top of my shotgun (over a hard floor most likely), he'd get a fistful of my opinion about destroying other people's property (you may as well kiss your barrel goodbye at that point!) That spring requires some heavy flexing to make it compress.

As Justin1628 says, an 870 with the 18.5" barrel and pistol grip is a very short gun already and I doubt you would notice the extra 4.5" over the 14". Plus, the longer barrel lets you get an extra round in the mag.:D

actually if i put the butt of my Knoxx on the ground and push down on the gun, it compresses quite easily - you can do it with one hand.
i am just saying that there is a possibility that the official measuring your shotgun resorts to this - and if it compresses below 26" you are in deep $#!%.

a gun very close to 26" appeals to me because thats small enough to easily fit into a backpack. thing is, im not a fan of PG stocks and i want to do it with a full stock - so im waiting for CanAm's 8.5" Grizzlies. with a Hogue short LOP stock they should come out to a hair over 26" :D
