What's the point of scope covers when the rifle is in use, really?

Scope covers are very much an individual choice, but on a personal note I've used them since they came on the market and I love them. Where I hunt, we do a lot of bush pushing either to push game or get to our overwatch positions. The scope covers keep rain, snow, plant debris and dust off my optics. If I happen to jump a deer I have the covers flipped open by the time I have the rifle to my shoulder. At the range (CFB Borden), we often get gusts of wind that will blow dust onto the optics, so after I've shot my relay, I flip the covers down to keep the lenses clear and protected. Whether you have the rubber bikini covers or the manufacturers supplied scope covers, they need you out of shooting position to remove in that you have to hold the rifle with one hand and tie up the other hand taking them off the scope. True, it only takes a moment but sometimes that's all it takes to miss your shot. As I said, it's personal choice, but I have them on all my scopes and they've served me very well indeed.

the reason for lens cap is quite simple, if you have ever hunted in a snowy environment especially when there is snow covered spruce branches, the odd of your lens being jamb packed with snow is basically 100%. thus the need for lens caps , of course there is a trade off in speed of deployment but at least you'll know for sure you can actually see through the optic to take the shot.
