What's the purpose of the horseshoe "U" touching the Tavor barrel?

To free float the Tavor, you remove a rubber horseshoe shaped "U" that's touching the top of the barrel. It doesn't appear to serve any functional purpose? What's its purpose? Thanks.

It increases durability, and makes the rifle less picky about ammo in terms of accuracy (harmonics).
To truly free float the barrel, the u has to be removed, and the charging handle has to be modified.
Roughly a .75 to 1 moa increase in accuracy, but some ammo will shoot worse due to the barrel harmonics being freed up.
The tavors were originally designed with a fully free floated barrel, there is a part number still for the older style free float charging handle.

It provides support for the barrel !
It is still an 18" barrel, that's a lot of leverage on the internals. The Israeli's designed these rifles to literally be lived with on a day to day basis. Subjected to every day mishaps. Durability was a prime factor in it's design and evolution.

Didn't read this until now.

I don't understand how a U shaped piece of plastic on the top of the barrel provides support for the barrel. It looks like it provides support for the top handguard and rails.

It provides more rigidity to both the barrel and polymer around it. A "unibody" concept if you will.
Pull it out and push the plastic or barrel around, both flex easier than with it in.

The plastic does wrap around the barrel somewhat, it does provide lateral support in both directions and supports vertically in one direction...

Has anyone removed the Teflon sleeve? Any improvement on the accuracy? How do you remove it?
I tried to get the Sight stabilizer sleeve pin out but it will not move. The manual said that no tool is needed but it will not move. What tool do you use to get the pin out?
