What's the Ultimate Coyote Rig(Not Caliber)

These days I think most Howa, weatherby, Browning, Tikka ,Sako etc will work for what you need but the important part for me is accuracy, weight and a good trigger.
My current setup is a Tikka t3 in 222 with a long bipod. If I were to improve it I would get a wildcat composites stock to lighten it up and a 10 round mag.

My preference would be towards an accurate light weight semi with detachable magazines, a high magnification scope isn't as crucial where I hunt most shots will be under 300 yards but a reticle that is visible in low light is very beneficial. Something like a BCL102 in 6.5 creedmoor or ideally a .22-250 since its about as large as I can go in this province.

My current rig is a tikka t3 lite stainless .223 with a redfield 4-12x40 scope, if I were to upgrade it and stick to a bolt I'd either go for the same in one of the 1-8 twist .22-250's or build a 220 Swift.

I'm not sure that with coyote guns 'accuracy trumps everything ' I think that for general purpose coyote hunting you need a maneuverable, somewhat compact and not too heavy . It has to be reasonably accurate out to 250-300 yards and you have to have a scope that fits you and the rifle set up properly for quick shot. Coyotes dont always pose so the ability to get them in the crosshairs quick is almost the most important feature I feel. A spotter barrel in the 20-24" range in a hunting style stock and a scope with good eye relief set up properly is probably the most important aspects.

Lvsf is perfect (except for the blind mag). I had one in .17 rem and kick myself for selling it daily! I'd love one in .204 someday!

I can't say enough good things about my Ruger American Ranch in 556. It's light and compact, has 10+ round capacity and easy mag changes. The bolt throw is lightning quick, and it's plenty accurate. Plus it likes the heavier bullets which lets me push farther ranges if i need too.

I have three different rifles that I currently use 90% of the time for coyote hunting. Due to a bad knee I don't do a lot of walking so most of the time my Sako 85 Varmint Laminate topped with a Zeiss 4.5X14X42 gets used. If I want to shed a bit of weight or if the conditions are a little rougher then I have a Browning stainless stalker with a 4X16X40 Bushnell 4200 on it. If I'm sitting in a blind over bait like I was yesterday then my Cooper Model 52 wearing a Zeiss HD5 5X25X50 is mostly used.
All these rifles are stainless, have a detachable magazine, and a scope with enough magnification to focus on a coyotes vitals out to 500yds. These rigs plus a few others were paid for from the money made by selling coyote hides so I have shot and processed a few coyotes over the years.

The environment in which you hunt must necessarily play a role in choosing your rig. There may be places where you can comfortably and effectively employ a relatively heavy rifle and a high magnification optic. In other places, especially around here, the nature of the terrain makes that kind of combo much less effective. A lighter weight rig with a lower magnification optic (and more emphasis on a wide field of view) makes more sense. I enjoy my CZ 527 American for that reason.

IMHO, there is no such thing as a ultimate rig for coyotes.
Ultimately you need more than just one rifle and that's a good thing.

If I’m walking far for a stand T3 lite in 223, if I can call within a mile from the truck I lug out my 6XC.
One thing I find when trying to nail a dog further out in winter Alberta wind, the extra weight of the rifle is a lot easier to hold steady on the sticks...

Yup, almost always blowing a gale around here too, but in many places you might be calling you cannot see more than 200 yards because of the nature of the terrain.

Well my VTR is pretty light already.
For me in Sask I need accuracy I don't yet see in the Non-Restricted firearms.
I also see no need for 2 as my 223 has dropped hundreds.

So when choosing brifkes today it seems preference for everyone is different.

So I ordered an MDT Chassis along with a Magpul PRS.

Pictures to come.

More times than I can count I wish I’d’ve had a shotgun on me when them buggars over run the call or pop up outta nowhere at twenty yards.

Neither of my dedicated coyote rigs has a scope with more than 9x and I’ve never had issue with it. But that’s me where I’m calling.
