What's the Ultimate Coyote Rig(Not Caliber)

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I think I have my ultimate coyote rig figured out.

You buy or make your sticks?

I use sticks all the time too, but I just make mine out of doweling of various diameters. WAY cheaper than commercial versions of the same thing, work exactly the same, and the sets I left in the bush don't bother me much at all.

Ok so sounds like this is a decent rig.

If I keep it must switch to box mag. I detest the hinged floor plate.

Anyone run an MDT LSS for Hunting? Or are they bench guns?

I want this puppy as light and solid as possible.

The nice thing about a hinged floorplate is you can't loose or forget your magazine. For that reason it's my personal preference on a hunting rifle.

I use a stevens 200 in 2506. 75gr vmax at 3600+ fps. I hunt alot of farmland and some open hardwoods.
However i believe a 250 savage is a great compromise of smaller farm land and wodlots.
Im currently working on a pair slowly as ive been extremely busy. One with be a trim lil 98 action with a high figured walnut stock and the other will be a short barreled version in a lss chassis.
A 75gr to 90gr bullet works well on coyotes and ive never had one run more than a few yards. When using a 17 rem and 223 ive had to follow up and even finish them off.
That said im also building a 223 that will see field use as a coyote gun using the heavier weight options.

After years of calling and ambushing coyotes i think a howa mini action in 6.5 grendel would be about as ideal as i could think of.
I do use a 12ga as well. #4 buck works great

Until recently I shot a 75gr bullet from my 25/06, .243 and .223. I just switched to 69gr SMK'S for the .223 though. I really like the thought of a 6.5 Grendel too. Trying to muster up the gumption (to get my wife's blessing) to build an nr semi for coyotes in that caliber. I did just by a Troy PAR in .223 last year for that reason though, lol.

I run a HK SL8 in 223, a Rem 700 in a AICS chassis in 223 AI, a Rem 700 in 22-284, a Forbes in 243 (mostly goes out for Wolves) and a Rem 700 LVSF is 204 Ruger

I have a few dedicated coyote guns
The one I have shot the most with is a Tikka T3 stainless synthetic 22-250 topped with a Zeiss 4.5-14 shooting 50 gr vmax
For the 500 yd shots I like my T3 synthetic stainless in 257 wby shooting 110 accubonds at 3505fps
My newest and probably funnest is my WK180C topped with a Vortex Viper 2.5-10.

In an ideal world (like back in the 80's) an AR15 20" loaded with 55g FMJ so we did not blow big holes in the hide. Very effective, very accurate, very fun.

I have a cheap rig i assembled like 12 years ago, a NEF 223, a Tasco 6X24, cheap bipod, i have taken in excess of 10 coyotes over those years.
This rifle is dead accurate, i like expensive stuff, but i could never let go off this one go.

There is a gully pass at about 275 yards.
From my patio door i have about 75 feets of view on the gully.
I get ready when we see them running about 650 yards aways when they cross the field running, you know they gonna walk when they enter the gully. They are so forseeable.

I get ready and i wait them out.
This is one of my favorite hunt, from the patio benched on the picknic table with a cup of coffee.

Awesome....we had another member who banged a deer from his porch in his slippers! :)

I think that if you live out west I could see some usefulness in a long range predator rigs as there are just more options for some long range opportunities. But here in the east any rifle capable of MOA to 300yrds is more than enough for the majority of coyote hunting opportunities. Hunting here I would focus on a light, quick handling rig that you shoot well. Keep scopes Standard Magnification 4-12x max. Most of the shots I have taken in my 20 or so years for coyote hunting are inside 200yrds and many inside of 100yrds. Nothing worse than a miss on a 50 yrd scampering away coyote cause you can't find him in your scope dialed to 9 or 12 power.... super long range rigs with telescopes a top are best for the range or in other cases the back porch.

Not many have brought up Savage rifles so I will. I use a savage 12 heavy Barrell with a Vortex viper 6-20*44 scope. Shoots laser beams with factory ammo. Only thing I would mod is to put a pistol grip stock on it. I already have a timmeny trigger, so the stock change would be for fun

The more coyotes I shoot, the more I lean towards an accurate semiauto for the purpose. They come to the call or bait in groups at least 1/3 of the time, maybe more, and I hate shooting one and then edumacating the rest. That still happens when I have a semi, but not quite as often! :)

So my choice for the past few years has been a Ruger Mini14 Target, with the barrel shortened enough to remove the goofy tuner on the end; between that and the missing inches of tube I saved a bunch of weight. The gun is MOA with a few loads, and very close to MOA with almost any load. Happiness is a warm double! :) I'm just starting to experiment with a Kodiak WK180 which might be fun.

If I am using a bolt, I want a detachable magazine...which is something I detest for almost any other hunting. I'm doing more and more driving between stands nowadays, so the easy load/unload is nice to have. No heavy barrels, no extended magazines, no high-power scopes or mall-ninja stocks; just a 3-9x or 4-12x and a sporter-weight barrel. My current favourite bolt coyote slayer is a Merkel R15 in .243.

Otherwise, I like using odd-balls for coyotes: a .45-70 Sharps, a 16-inch-barreled 1885, a .54-cal traditional muzzleloader, a lever-action .358Win, a 9mm Beretta Storm around the house/yard, etc. My current quest is to knock over a coyote with a Ruger #1 in .450-400 Nitro Express; need to figure out some way to induce a charge! :)

Sadly, these novelty coyote rifles usually end up providing an education for both myself and the coyotes! :)

Yup. Very Similar to my Heym BBF 16ga. / .222 I use 1-1/4 oz of BB shot in the upper, and any good 40-50 gr. varmint bullet in the lower barrel. My favourite rig for calling coyotes in the bush.
