1 million rifles isn't a small production number. Overall many have survived over the years (sporterization is the biggest cause of them being destroyed not combat), and there are many out there in VG+ conditions (as far as milsurps go) simply because many were unissued.

I wouldn't say there isn't demand, just that the demand here doesn't drive the price up as high as the USA, who has a significantly larger firearms buying population, many of whom want American arms (much like how Lee Enfields and Rosses are here).

Just depends on the model of Mosin or Enfield.

Sporterizing Springfields was a big cottage industry in the US in the '50s and '60s and they do make a very good sporting rifle. The comparatively heavy barrel is a good feature, smooth actions in the ones made before ww2, and of course, the chambering in .30-06.

I sported an early Remington M1903 and it proved to be a very good hunting rifle. I installed a new 4 groove barrel, modified the bolt handle for scope clearance and added a Buehler safety and a trigger guard with a hinged floorplate as well as the classic Redfield Junior scope mount. The Remingtons are very hard and require spot annealing before drilling and tapping. In this case I wasn't profaning history by sporterizing the rifle as it was showing some bad spots of pitting.

The Winchester M70 mimicked the Springfield to some extent with a similar barrel contour, coned breech and rear action tang. The M1903 extractors are actually interchangeable on the pre-64 Model 70s as I recall.
