1 million rifles isn't a small production number. Overall many have survived over the years (sporterization is the biggest cause of them being destroyed not combat), and there are many out there in VG+ conditions (as far as milsurps go) simply because many were unissued.
I wouldn't say there isn't demand, just that the demand here doesn't drive the price up as high as the USA, who has a significantly larger firearms buying population, many of whom want American arms (much like how Lee Enfields and Rosses are here).
