So, I bought a box of assorted stuff at an auction, as there was a couple items in the box I wanted. In it there was a small box with several cartridges in it. I would like to know what they are.

The head stamp looks like this.... marks from the primer to the edge divide the head into 1/4s. On the left side is 19 and on the right side of the primer is 40. Above is a little figure of a creature with 4 legs on the bottom and a big tail on the right side and two arms and a head on the left side. Could be a "dragon". on the bottom is a BO with a slash down the middle of the O (a letter from a East european alphabet??)

The cartridge does not look like regular brass but has a kind of reddish coloration. The bullet is silver coloured and FMJ. The shoulder seems abnormally long. Except for the long sloping shoulder I might say it looks close to a .308 case.

I suppose I could take some measurements and I could try and get a good picture of the head stamp to post up but any ideas?

Rampant Bear was used by Bulgaria while it was a Kingdom.

Ammo will likely be 8x56R but they also made some 8x50R in the same plant.

Hope this helps.

The "B Phi" mark is from Sofia Arsenal, the manufacturer; it is Bulgarian Cyrillic for "VF".

To determine exactly what you have, you must consider the case length.

8x50R is 50mm long, 8x56R is 56mm long: quarter-inch difference.

Hope this helps.
