What's up with Vortex scopes?

I have had 2 vortex scopes and nothing but problems and failures. one was the el cheapo models and the other one was a viper PST. Sent em in for warranty like 4 times and just got fed up and sold them for a Zeiss HD5 5x25 with the 1000z reticle. Amazing scope.

For $1500 ,with FFP , PST Gen 11 5-25, is the best option.

If you want to go SFP,SHV is a good option.

I just got a Leupold VXi 6.5-20 ,for $800
It has excellent glass, but the turrets are a bit soft( you really have to pay attention).
Ive ordered a set of Target turrets, hopefully that’ll fix that issue.
It’s the only glass I’ve got for $800, that’s been clear,for me.

The FFP Nigthforce SHV can be had for $1500 as well.

They are junk. I gave them away to friends who were using old 80$ tasco scopes and they perfer the tascos over the 800$ vortex's.

Here is the deal. I'm shopping for a scope to mount of a 700 5r wich I hope to be able to shoot at 1km. I also want to hunt with it.

For the budget I got, Vortex seam to offer a lot of features I want. But I see a metric ####-ton of them for sale all over the place used. Is it because people move away from them because of a lack of quality? I read a lot of comments about their life time warranty and how poeple had good experiance with it. Is it a scope that will start to fail 1 year down the range? Should I just go broken and buy a more expensive brand?

I want a first focal plane scope with variable power ranging from 5 to 20x. I want target turrets. I got about 1000-1500$ budget.

They seem to be good for their price. Remember with optics you get what u pay for..go cheap $1500...you can really only expect mediocre performance...

A scopes main selling feature should be how great their warranty is.

I,m not sure if it should be the main feature, but its nice to know that you will be looked after if there is ever a problem.
Thats why I like a lot of the Bushnell scopes, even if you break it its covered. And when hunting in thick bush its easy to fall or drop your gun and end up with a damaged scope.

I think it seems like you hear lots of reports of having to use Vortex's warranty for two reasons... 1- They're more affordable that other brands with similar features; i.e. there's a ton of them out there. Some are bound to fail. And 2- People typically make a point to let people know when bad things happen, not necessarily if they have nothing to report.

But then again, it seems like posts like this one are MUCH more common than people complaining about lack of quality:

I have had 3 Vipers and 1 PST and really liked them all. I know there are people that say they are crap but I have not had any failures.

I Just bought a Strike Eagle, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another Vortex optic in the future.

Ditto. Had 1 PST, 1 SPARC, 1 Strikefire and 1 Razor, as well as still own 1 Venom MRDS and 1 Viper HS/T. Never had any issues that weren't caused by me (slipped on some ice while out coyote hunting with the PST and broke 1 of the turrets when the rifle crashed to the ground). A higher end scope like a Leupold Mark 4 or a Nightforce NXS might have survived the fall, but you can't say that with certainty. Tracking and electronics have never given me any issue. I wish I hadn't sold the Razor, it was one of the old 1-4x models, great scope.

Warranty is important.....but there are several companies out there that have crap for product but good warranty.....does that mean you should buy them? I'm not taking a chance of having a scope failure when on a hunt of a lifetime because I know the manufacturer will replace my scope when I get home.

There are other companies that offer a very similar warranty but do not feel the need to add it to the list of features to sell product.

Back when I was first starting out I believed salesmen and was doomed into a handful of them. I didn't know any better at the time but after getting some quality optics I see how they fall short. At todays prices they are not worth it to me. Rather spend a little more and get something better.

I've had a Vortex Diamondback monted on my 270wsm for years with numerous shots fired. It has been great without any issues. It's been in the bush, at the range and packed up and taken with me on flights across Canada...it's never failed to hold its zero.
I have other scopes, some cheaper, some more pricey, but none are better in my opinion.

I was in the same situation as you, for a long time... I thought about it so long I saved up enough to buy a Kahles! Many a nights up till 2 am debating and contemplating....

If I had to stay at a 1500$ limit id go SFP NXS. At least you know its you missing not the scope.....
