Whats with all the HK's for sale....

Actually I don't really think the amount of SL8 rifles in the EE is a coincidence. We have a batch of new non restricted rifles coming out and hitting the market. The SL8 is one the older original non restricted black rifles. It's not as sought after as the new stuff, and some of the owners are probably looking for a change. The Tavor, FN2000, PS90 (rebarreled), CX4 rebarreled, XCR and there are more on the horizon.

One other thing lets face it the SL8 is the Michael Jackson of black rifles. :p

If only HK would just sell us a semi-auto G36, they'd be dominating the non-res black rifle market (even for the $4000 it'd probably cost).

Canada is a dead market. The leg work and BS involved with both producing and exporting/importing such a firearm does not offset the pathetic sales numbers.

Ya but if they sold semi G36 in the US it would be worthwhile don't you think. They could sell em to both the US and Canada.

Again, the hassles of exporting to Canada for the chance to sell what, maybe 100 rifles? Not worth it. Don't forget, this is HK we're talking about. They have plenty of gov and mil contracts to fill they could really care less about the civilian market.

Here's my two bits.

I own one and had a ball with it. But after a couple of years a couple of things hit me. One is that this rifle isn't really a black rifle. I may get egged for saying that, but it's true. It's heavy, and much more awkward than most black rifles with that thumbhole stock. You won't see the 3-gun guys using it. If you put serious optics on it in hopes of making it a target or varmint gun, the thing becomes even more ungainly. At that point a good bolt gun makes sense if you are going after varmints or targets. They will shoot sub MOA but you will experience some real frustration trying to get it there. Sometimes dual sport hybrids work well and sometimes they don't. In my opinion the SL8 doesn't.

There it is in a nutshell, from a person with experience as well as a former owner of the firearm in question. The rifle is not really suitable for ....well, anything. Whatever you plan to do with your rifle, you can find a better alternative. Add to that the cost of buying the thing and you can see how people get finished with them after a while and move on.

Just thinking, (people disagree with me if I am wrong) you could probably buy different gun to cover each possible use for a SL8 and still pay less money than for a single SL8. . . AND each of those guns would be better at it's job than a SL8.

That only leave the "cool" factor. It has lots of that for a collector.

I actually think HK does a good job of catering to the civilian market. German law imposes all sorts of barriers on what HK can produce/sell to civilians. Nonetheless, HK finds a way around, and produces some very high quality rifles for civilian consumption; USC, SL8, MR223, MR308. I can't imagine their sales are high for these guns, but they still make 'em! HK rocks.

Well since the HK MR556 and MR762 are going to be made in the US you would think they would make the G36 there too? The US doesn't care about what kind of guns a company makes on their real estate.

You guys need to keep in mind that HK made those SL8 because they didn't want to have their newest rifle G36 series being used in negative media reporting, it was in the dark times of firearm ownership.Remember if you do buy an SL8 you know that in the end you will be upgrading it or converting it back to G36 form thus spending twice what you originally paid for it or more.

I don't own one but I have fired it a few times through different buddies and held it on occasion. It is not too bad but for the weakling civilian it could be a problem. But hey it is non-restricted and can be converted to G36 status with a little work!

The canadian civilian market is nothing but small - we might be small compared to the US, but we are a big market relative to many European nations and all other parts of the world
