What's with the Current Trend of Large-Capacity Magazines in Hunting Rifles

"FUDD" acoording to "wiktionary.org".

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Fudd :)

Now that is interesting.

I first heard the term "Fudd" being used too describe gun owners about 45 years ago, and back then it was in no way derogatory. It simply referred to a shooter whose tastes ran in the direction of classic hunting rifles, leverguns, muzzleloaders and single-action revolvers. Back then the other guys who belonged to my gun club often poked fun at me because I loved my leverguns and single-shots and Ruger Blackhawks...but also really enjoyed my AR15 (with which I hunted, quite legally, for a number of years), my Beretta 71 (they called it my "pimp gun"), my CZ75, my HK91 and other "non-Fuddy" guns. It was all in good fun, of course...back then there wasn't a lot of the "interdisciplinary bickering" that is so commonly seen today among shooters.

Over the years, the term Fudd began to be used in more and more insulting contexts. It still never bothered me, because I knew what the term originally meant and I knew that the new-generation a-wipes misusing it didn't know, so...sticks and stones.

I guess that language always changes and evolves. A Fudd is now apparently defined as someone who supports gun control directed at guns he doesn't personally own and enjoy? I know that's the way the term has been used/abused/misused for years now, but didn't really think that it had become the official definition, if there is such a thing. But there it is, in digital black and white.

So, I guess I should be insulted, since I do not support any kind of gun control that has ever come down the pipe in my lifetime, and have spent more time and effort combating and protesting it than any of those previously-mentioned a-wipes have. My tastes have focused and narrowed a bit over the years, but I have always supported all forms of gun ownership and will continue to do so. It just gets a bit difficult when the kiddies spend so much time calling you names whenever you say anything that might indicate you don't necessarily agree with 100% of the drivel spewing out of their mouths.

It's rather generous of the people calling others "youngsters" and to make fun of them.

Meanwhile the gun rights have been stripped away under the "oldsters" a$$ while they seem to have done nothing about other then to let it slip away under their feet for the younger generation !

Hey, Kammy - "Glory to Moscow" and turkish single shotguns ! You boys did well, LITERALLY saved the country.f:P:

Yup, then and than.
Gooder ingrish.

I could give a fiddlers fruck what you stuff in your mag or how many.
Pile the crap on.
I’m sitting here watching the Canucks and laughing at this thread and the butt hurt feelings.

Carry forth.

If one thinks back, AICS and AI type magazines have since decades been only available in 5 or 10 shot + magazines. The trend now seems to be for lower capacity. MDT has a flush fit 3 shot for 308, a short 3 shot 30-06 or 300wm 3.850" mag for the CIP length long action, Hawkins, Snowy Mountain and others are making 3-4 shot mags that fit into AICS. Mainly to cater for the hunters who cannot handle magazines sticking out.

I find a big old magazine is awkward, hooking on bush and such.
Just me...do as you see fit.
I rocked a few LE back in the day, now I don't really need the extra rounds.

I don't see how 10 rounds is considered high capacity. I had a 26" Winchester lever 92 in 38-40 that held around 16 rounds in the tube, it was the norm in that era. Load on Sunday and shoot all week.

Pistol caliber; I wouldn't hunt with it. Good way to watch a slightly wounded deer run away to rot in the deep brush.
I think the thread was about 'Hunting Rifles'?
You be you though.

Frankly I don't know what is driving the magazine capacity trend, but I suppose it all depends on your type of shooting. I have a Savage LE2B with the McMillan stock. It's super accurate and a detachable mag would definitely improve the setup for playing around at PRS-style shooting, yet Savage chose to go with a blind magazine. Likely a price point decision when they developed the rifle.

At the same time, if you can manage to lose a hinged floorplate, then you're a very special sort of person. But a detachable mag? Those can get dropped or misplaced easily. So the knife cuts both ways.

I am against all firearms restrictions implemented in the last few decades. I have no use for a big game hunting rifle with a 10 round or more magazine, but if someone wants to use one, go right ahead. If you want to wear a vest with a dozen extra magazines, paint your face and pretend to be a seal or delta force member, you go right ahead, as long as you follow the regulations and are safe,
I really don't care.
I see those kind of people at the range, shooting zombie targets on a regular basis, I just laugh to myself, and carry on.

I don't condemn anyone for thier within the law choices.
I would show up at the outdoor pistol range with my single shot 22 LR Hammerli target pistol and get alot of stares from others. I think I am the only 50 meter pistol enthusiast in NE Alberta.

Agree +++.

Question: Will the 10 round or more magazine and the rounds on the rifle and the extra magazines make the hunter a better Marksman ? First round hits, unknown ranges, improvised shooting positions, time pressure. Really ?

I have a Sig cross with a 10rd mag, less reloading when plinking/competing with it or smoking hogs, hunting dismounted wandering in the bush I run a 5rd and keep the 10rd in my pack.

Full capacity mags are where it's at in the US, has been for a while now, when you have 5 - 50 hogs standing in front of you it's nice to be able to shoot away.

I'm thinking of the newer-manufacture big-game hunting rifles. Some of them now come with large-capacity detachable magazines capable of holding 10 rounds. Who needs 10 rounds in the magazine when hunting? I can't think of a single time when I've been hunting over the past 50+ years that I've ever felt the need for more than the 3 or 4 rounds in my magazines. I greatly prefer fixed magazines with hinged floorplates over detachable magazines (both aesthetically and for security), but I can live with a 3-5 round detachable mag if it sits flush with the bottom of the stock. The larger magazines that drop way down below the stock line look terrible, in my opinion, but more importantly add unnecessary weight (close to 4-5 oz.or more when fully loaded) as well as making the rifle more difficult to carry in the field. When I'm carrying a rifle in the field (not slung) I usually carry it with my hand under about the location of the magazine. That seems to be about the best point for balance. A magazine hanging down in that location gets in the way. Is this trend just a nod to tacticool?

In all aspects of life there is change. Personally, some are good, most are unwarranted; especially in todays social lunacy, even in the hunting world. As pertaining to your titled thread, it's another trend, to fullfill the gap of ecentrities of want-a-be Fudds. Yea, yea to each their own however, many seem to escape the scope of tradition in the Fudd world.

Perhaps I'm not completely understanding your question, but where I like to use 10 round mags is when calling coyotes. Not unusual to have 5 or 6 show up, and if you have a 3 round mag you feel very unprepared.
