Whats with the different types of speed loaders?

I recently got my hands on a S&W 586-3 through a trade and included were two types of speed loaders. One the them you have to push and twist the knob to lock the rounds in. To reload with this speed loader you just need to press it against the cylinder and the rounds pop out. The other type was twist to lock and twist to unlock. How are you supposed to reload by twisting if the cylinder is free spinning?

Off topic question: What do the K/L/N?-frame designations mean?

Most people open the cylinder with thier fingers, so the beast is under control while you are using the speedloader.

J frame is the smallest frame size curently made by S&W and includes the 5 shot .38 special model 36 and 60

K frame is the standard police issue since before WWII, including the Model 10 in .38 special, and the longer frame window .357 mags

L frame is slightly larger than the k frame, although the grips are identical. It was designed around the .357 mag.

N frame is the largest frame S&W made prior to the new .500. It is big enough for the .44 and .45 calibers.
 
HKS speedloaders have the knob that you turn to free the ctgs in the wheelgun's cylinder. You have to hold the sides of the cylinder to be able to accomplish this.

Safariland speedloaders you simply push against the cylinder and the ctgs pop into it.

Personally, I prefer Safariland ones. Quicker & more efficient.
 
The twist & lock ones are the older version, it was designed with the idea that most people hold the cylinder steady with their fingers while loading. Problem is that some people could never remember which way to twist to make the cartridges drop.

That's where the push & drop ones (Safariland) came in. Even in a panic all you have to do is align the holes and push.

Modified my HK's for .455. Wonder if the same could be done with the other one?
 
From Safariland there are COmp 2 and Comp3 loaders.. The comp 3 are about 3 inches long and throw the rounds out , the comp2 are twist and lock..
Then there are jet loaders, hks has loaders and there are maxfires.. I've seen a couple others in competition but safarilands are about 90% of what the new guys use.. I'm guessing jet-loaders don't exist anymore since only the older guys seem to have them...

Can't see why not, they are all plastic. You should be able to shave it until it fits. Good thing is they're not that expensive so if you screw it up just get some more.

Moon clips (in my opinion) seem to be the best option for speed. Only problem is you have to invest in mooner and demooner tools but once it's done you don't have to play with a speed loader...it's just drop and shoot.
