Whats with the gophers in SE Sask?

When I was out earlier in the spring there was lots running around, not tons though. Im going to got out this weekend if the weather holds up to check for some baby gophers and to see if the little yotes are out yet

I noticed something rather odd yesterday. One of the critters was taking nesting material down a hole, maybe a little one wet the bed or they are really late.

Not seeing many in my pastures this year either, they do run in cycles, diease can play a big factor if they get to thick. Lots of badgerbastiches digging as well, make a lot bigger hole than any gopher. Heading out today to check another pasture but don;t expect to see many.

They may have lost their first litter due to the spring flood. Don't see many around Radisson.

There are far fewer in southern sask. I am seeing three or four in fileds that used to hold several hundred. I think it was the snow. There are still good spots just have to do more scouting.

I have talked to alot of farmers who say that the numbers are way down due to the moisture early in the year which gave the gophers some type pf illness which killed them. Titch you should take me with you if you are shooting 60 in a day.

It"s a crying shame, I've been on a gopher safari two years ago in south Saskatchewan and shot at least 60 in a half hour, for 5 1/2 hours straight. Too many to count. The four of us had to leave the dog town to seek sustenance and give the long range shooter a break. They both had a crick in their neck from looking though the scope and a blister on their thumb from pushing cartridges in the magazine, no kidding. Hopefully you guys get some better results this summer, and hope for more normal weather next year.
