I dont understand why prices on used Colt .45 1911 types are in the $800.00 to $1200.00 range.

It wasnt that long ago you could buy new ones (80 series)for $550.00 to $700.00

I was in a gun shop this week and they had a old wartime Colt that looked like some had lost it then dug it up 50 years later and the asking price was still around $800.00

I understand the principle of supply and demand, but when did these become scarce?

You could still get a Norinco 1911 style .45 for 500$ probably, but then there are also high end .45s like SVI which will cost in the 3000$ and more. They are far from scarce, you can get a good one for around 800-1000$.

I don't know how you define "long ago"...but the prices you listed are from the last century. Nowadays, they start at around $1000 (perhaps even more now that the dollar has dropped again) for a basic mil-spec Series 80. Then, there are guys who pay extra for Series 70 guns, largely for sentimental reasons. Now pre-series 70 commercial Colts have real collector value and are becoming hard to find, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them selling for more than their brand new equivalents. WWII era GI guns are still a dime a dozen though.

All new beefed-up Norinco 1911 is 350$ from CanAm. From there it can go 3000$.
This guy is talking about Colt pistols, not Norstinco or other clones.

In that case I think the answer is simple: you pay for the brand, same way you do with Harley-Davidson, Rolex or whatever else.

plus the fact that very few colt brand pistols come with all of the tacticool/gamer accesories so guys have had to pay to have them added.... unlike kimber for example where you can buy a full blown pistol ready to run.

There are very few Colt 1911's for sale at the moment in Canada. When I bought mine the dealer told me that it's very hard for them to get new ones. Plus when the $CDN went down recently prices went up.

What are you smokin' dude????
Well, perhaps "a dime a dozen" is a bit of an exaggeration, though I didn't expect anyone to take that statement literally...But I guess you never know who's on the other end of the Internet...

In any event, there's a fair number of WII-era military Colts floating around, although many have tricked out in an effort to turn them into target pistols (with varying degrees of success).

You'd have a hard time finding a 1911A1 Colt for under $1500, if it's in decent shape and original, not modified or refinished.

Most new plastic guns sell for around $800 so a good used Colt 45 is well worth that same amount, IMO.
I don't know where you re, but I see used Colts selling for a lot less than $1500. Heck, you can get a Series 80 Gold Cup National Match for under a grand.
