Whats with the ugly spot welded sks mags

Just because you may only now have started seeing these ugly pinned mags, that doesn't mean they're new.
They've been around for years...

I guess maybe cause I'm from a small town they have had old stock for years. I just started seeing them 1-2 months ago online and last month at wholesale.

I made a sheet metal block that is riveted (2 rivets) to the bottom of the (original 10rd) mag. 5 rounds max, and the original mag-dump function works fine. The prototype was just some old powder-coated scrap sheet metal; the final version was 16ga. stainless steel. Works like a charm, no malfunctions, and 100% legal.

The neatest modification that I have seen involves replacing the riveted stud at the follower spring.
Welding a peg on the follower is unobtrusive and fast and easy to do.
The large welded external stud through the magazine cover is sloppy, lazy and ugly work. The peg on the follower would cost no more, and take no more time.
The importer needs to specify what is acceptable.

I have done a similar alteration, welding the block in place along the bottom of the inner magazine box.

Definitely not new, but most of the shipments over the past two years had the nice pinning, then this big batch this year had the weld again for some reason.

If i'm paying for an sks that's ####ed compared to another one that's not there better be like 50% off.

Many of them have failures to feed because of the inconsistency of the rod size versus different tolerances.

As far as pricing goes, at $200 there definitely isn't much room for profit margins -- these do have to ship from overseas. Nothing wrong with a $200 hunting rifle or project base for the mall cop guys. They won't really ever be collectible. Even the 1949s with the franken-mags don't sell for much used.

I disagree. Weld or rivet, whats the difference. I will buy all the welded 49's and 53 Izzies that you can find. A pinned mag is a pinned mag.

Which point(s) do you disagree with?

I've sold numerous SKS rifles, the ones with welded magazines do not sell for as much as they look like total crap.

It's also a known fact that the welded rod on the follower causes feeding issues in some rifles but not all of them. It's just a bonus because if the laws ever change you can chop off the rod and the magazine is not butchered. However, after a decade of a conservative government we didn't even have a sniff of magazine law changes so it's not happening any time soon (next decade). I just decided to buy examples with riveted magazines.

Wow to bad frankenpinned is back, I am heading to CTC this morning as they have a 20x CTC money day, and their shooter quality sks are on for $169.99, so I am going to try and pick out the best of the worst! I have a franken pinned 1949, got it a couple years ago from Westrifle. I expect to sell it in the next couple months and it is refurbed, but I don't think the frankenpinnigvwillcdetract too much!

All things being equal of course, ya i would take the one with the riveted mag, I'm suggesting that from a collectors point of view their really shouldn't be any difference as its a similiar alteration.

Yeah, that's true. They both would have the same decreased value across the line.

The weld just looks so aesthetically displeasing to me. I would just hate the rifle.

Assuming that our mag laws remain, we are allowed to keep the Sks, and to be a collector one must accept modification. Would it be more desirable to have the orig SN match mag plug welded and BBQ painted or a blued follower pinned mag with non matching SN's?

Hard to predict the future but the mismatch with a clean magazine will probably be worth more.

With a lot of these unrefurbed coming in, with the mags swapped at pinning, I was thinking of starting a thread to see if we can match up some of them, I know there are a lot of them but it is a shot at mating the mags with their original rifles, these mags are so clean with just the original serial #, it's a shame really!

I support this idea. It may take some organizational work to come up with a system that can match-make with out each person
scrolling thru an endless list of serial numbers - but if we could brain-storm it rather than rejecting it out of hand, it could be a nice thing.

That would be nice if that worked out. Luckly, I only keep all matching stamped no force matched/rare years/tula that are blued to start with. The rest have 1000-2000 rounds corrosive go through them then I sell or trade and keep all the accessories.

A mag mismatch register would be a tough sell. I expect most would be hesitant to post SNs they have/want in any sort of data base, especially not one that is open to the internet public. It would need to be one trusted person keeping a spreadsheet of only SN wanted, SN they have, and contact info of some sort. Email? Easy to get an anonymous addy through hotmail etc. there would also need to be a guarantee that the list would be destroyed immediately if the SKS is changed to restricted or prohibited legal status.

Trying to figure out a discrete way, we could easily show the number on our unmatched mag and the person who needs that one could pm, but that would not help the op. Think think think! ;)

Just post a thread and add serial numbers in a sequential list. People check the first post, look for their S/N. The real work is collecting serial numbers... be prepared for a deluge of e-mails and PMs. It becomes a full-time job.
