What's wrong with 410 ammo recently???

Hi all,

I have browning bps 410 and rem 870 410 shotties and they all performed fine without feeding issues until recently. I bought some new ammo this week, which cost me about $500. Winchester, challenger and Ferdal all seems to be too large to fit into the chamber, I really have to push the forend hard to close the action. The only ammo that feeds amothly is sterling 410 green box. I tried some of my old ammo purchased in 2020 and they all feed fine. Did the manufacturers changed the dimension of 410 recently???

I have had similar issues with federal 2 1/2 inch upland loads in 3 inch chambered single shot. I really have to push/force them into the chamber to get them to seat enough to close the action. Picked up some challenger 3 inch loads last summer and they side in just fine. Just poor quality control i think.

A friend of mine has a Savage 24 in 20 ga/22 and we have noticed some of the new Federal target loads don’t like to chamber due to a flared crimp. Thesame shells chamber fine in my Turkish made single shot. He also has issues ejecting Rio target loads after firing. Seems a tight chamber compared to my Lazer arms single.

First of all, the ability to buy .410 shells in Ontario seems to be a bit of a minor miracle. Secondly, I hate to think what shooting the 'magnum' shells in a too-short chamber must do to the already non-existent and ineffective shot pattern. But don't mind me- if I had my way .410s would be legally banned from all types of hunting.

410 has a place in legitimate hunting, the problem with 41o is it is used improperly a great majority of the time.

For me it’s the perfect rabbit gun when in bull rushes and close range shots. I use a Stoeger double barrel with 20” barrels and two triggers. Improved/ modified.
Took a lot of Rabbits with it and doesn’t turn then into hamburger. Great for squirrels too but prefer air rifles for that.
Your right about use on ducks etc, not enough gun for shots over 20 yards.

I have some newer 12 Gauge, & the ends/crimps were a bit flared on most of them, noticed they weren't running through without really having to really 'rack it'. I ran them through my pump, {un-fired!} & it sorted them out, for the most part, next time, they ran mostly normally.

Got another 410 order, Challenger and Sterling chambers just fine. Federal and Winchester not so much.

It's mentality like this that caused Ontario to be behind the times with hunting regulations. We have only been allowed to use 7 shot for a few years now. Banning a certain show size is completely unnecessary because of advancements in shotshell technology. A 410 shell loaded with #9 tss can be deadly to wild turkey. That said, many rabbits, grouse and squirrels are harvested with 410 shells. The bigger issue, as already pointed out, is the miracle of finding them in stock. I noticed a couple shops in Quebec have been receiving shipments but with a strict 2 box limit, the purchase is soured by shipping costs.

Loaded 3" shells will easily fit in a 2 1/2" chamber ,,,,, BUT ,,,,,, when fired , the crimp
will open up into the forcing cone ( End Of Chamber). This will force the load through a smaller hole
& creat more pressure than normal ,,,,,,, Not Safe !!

Couldn't agree with you more - down south, where States have allowed .410 for turkey hunting, you see all sorts of success with TSS in a .410 3". Realistically, we should be allowed to use it up here too.

Wild that a few less pellets of the same size going the same speed is somehow banworthy? Should we ban 22s next? They’re no 22 magnum, which itself is no 223, even that can’t hold a candle to a 308, which is tiny compared to a 375 and on and on. I think he’s speaking more to his lack of skill and knowledge of his firearms characteristics than he realizes. A chronically online “talker” who’s “experiences” and opinions are gained vicariously.
