What's wrong with Norc synthetic stock?

My Norc M305 synthetic stock has a nice and tight fit, I've rounded off the sharp bits and it appears to work just fine. So why are the Norc stocks always referred to as crap? Or is it just the Chu wood stocks that suck?
 
Take the action out, grab the front and back of the stock and give it a twist. Its like a pool noodle. Put a bipod on it and lean into the bipod or twist the rifle upright with a stiff swivel bipod and you can see the stock flex.
Now with all this being said I still have a plastic norc stock on mine. I bedded the action with mareintex and reinforced the front end with epoxy and carbon arrow shafts. It helped immensely, Is it a Sage or a Vltor? Hell no. but it didn't cost 1000$ either.

They are fine.

The rifle will still shoot very accurately for a battle rifle in the standard plastic stock.

I prefer wood so I bought a walnut Boyds when they were on sale a few years back.
 
I've always found the USGI stocks to be best for feel, weight distribution, and streamlining. The new Norinco plastic stocks have those sharp corners (easily worked down), but they are also chunky, especially the rear grip. If Norinco wanted to make something really, really cool, they should make a plastic version of the E2 stock. Now that would sell a lot more rifles IMHO.
 
The black plastic stocks are an improvement (IMHO) over the chu wood stocks because you can still beat a zombie over the head with that unit and it will survive said zombie invasion. Yeah, it's a battle rifle and the front end twists, so does my USGI glass stock. Again, a few carbon fiber arrow shafts glass/resin'ed into place solves that problem it if it is a problem at all. Currently my USGI glass stock is not reinforced at all. I wanted to keep it as light as possible.

Now if I can just install another Garand buttplate on my USGI glass stock, I'll be good to go!

Instructions on the carbon shaft reinforcement would be appreciated, also some tips on where to bed the rest of the action.....Photo's would be great!
 
I second this thread. Its funny 'cause the first thing i ordered was a gi stock...and found it pretty funny that the norinco has reiforcement at the front end while the gi is easily crushed/bended in the front. Theres a big heavy metal bedding block thing in there too which is....good?


I didnt think too long about it though because the GI stock is way lighter and thats far more important to me. It isnt a flush fit at the receiver so Ill probably put a tiny bit of bedding in it and call it great
 
How much lighter is the GI stock to the Norc? Is it really that noticeable? I could reduce the weight of my Norc syn stock by removing all the accessories in the buttstock, but I think they are great so I'll leave 'em in. Especially that crazy chinese "oil" in the bottle (I'd love to know what it compares to in the Western world)! Has anyone compared accuracy before/after bedding the Norc syn stock?
 
The stock contacts the the vertical portion of the ferrule, which is a big no no for accuracy, easily fixed, and the fix will reduce weight by 1/100 of an ounce. :)
 
Please tell me the easily fixed solution!! I've got a dremel and hacksaw ready to go....along with a couple of beers of course! I see that the BlackFeather stock gets around the ferrule issue by having the Op Rod guide as an attachment for the stock, but not sure how you would do this without buying a M14.CA op rod guide...

Do me a favour and take your time and shoot a couple tight groups with it in stock condition like it is now with quality ammunition.
Really take your time and make them count.
Take some pictures.
Then hack the thing apart, swap stuff out, do what you need to do.
Then shoot some good groups with it again with quality ammunition and take some more pictures.
My hypothesis is that it will shoot exactly the same. Ask me how I know :D
 
In the short time Ive been a nutter I can recall seeing a cuple of threads on this very subject.
Lets have a genuine side by side shoot off with a stock 305 as a benchmark and compare the tricked out, tuned up non stock 305.
Sadly there were never any takers as I recall. Which is a shame because these guns have an auotomatic reputation for being lousy out of the box.

But if Id spent a crap load of money on parts I dont think I would want to find out either.

Your money your gun have fun, but it would be a hell of a day at the range, think of the bragging rights when you beat a 5000 dollar JAE,SAGE etc with a basic 305
or vice versa as you stomp all over the basic 305. Any and all states of tune allowed, what a hell of a day :)
Just my 2c, cos Im a cheap bastard and want value for every cent I spend.
Very happy knowing that I can easily hit a 6ftx2ft vertical target at 500 yds, just like a 2000 dollar Springfield
 
Good point- If I had money burning a hole in my pocket I would immediately get a BlackFeather stock from M14.CA, but I'm getting just under 2.5 inch groups at 80m with open sights which is about as good as my eyes can do. I'm sure any competant CGN shooter could beat my shooting, but my original goal of being able to shoot game out to 150m+ is easily acheived with what I've got now. I know I could shrink these groups with a CASM mount and scope, but when it comes to accuracy I've got a 7mm08 Savage that does the job. I still want to continue tweaking the Norc however....
 
As Travis & Lost have alluded to, there is this thing called the "Law of Diminishing Returns" we all run into when tweaking our M14's...The more you spend on it, the
less incremental impovements you can expect. Tweak it anyways...but the best thing you can do to improve its performance is to
put a lot of lead down range.
