I've been reloading and shooting 30-30 this weekend. Always good for the soul. :D I've always liked 170gr bullet idea and have previously had good luck with them for accuracey. Today I was real impressed with the sweet spot I found on some 150gr Sierra game kings I had never tryed before. Big difference to point of aim too.

What do you guys shoot? Reports on game would be welcome too. I've only ever played with and not hunted with a 30-30. Gotta do something about that...

I've found that any of the 170's work very well.

My selection is dictated by price. This is the ONLY caliber I do this for.

RePete.

One of the nicest things about the tudda tudda. Not enough velocity to wreck cheaper bullets.

I'd thought the same about 170s too. But with 3 150gr Sierra bullets pretty much touching at 50 yds out of my old Marlin I may broaden my horizons. :D

Actually, premier and Sasquatch member Gatehouse gave me these bullets last year and I'm finally use'n them up. My loads shoot 8" above factory 170gr stuff that I had her sighted in for.

Hornady Interlock 170 grain FP did a nice job on my last moose, and a lot of deer.

Ditto!

I have taken a good number of deer with this bullet. It shoots very well out of my 90 year old M1894

I use lyman 173 gr GC Bullets cast from linotype/ww/tin for good expansion , and size to .310 dia for accuracy.Put 5 in a row into 2 inches at 50 meters.
Iron sights. From a rest mind you:rolleyes: Now have a peep sight, will do better:)

the only game Ive shot with the 30-30 Win, fell to a 170 gr. Sierra FP

If I was to use my 30-30 again, I would load 150 gr. Barnes X-FN or 170 gr. Partitions

Premiums never hurt, and these two were developed for the 30WCF in particular. Performance should be awesome.

I have loaded up Speer 170g. My brother used my NEF 30-30 to take 2 deer last year. I think that the Speer is a little to tough for small deer. I sectioned one and they actualy have a fairly thick jacket at the base. I phoned Speer and talked to them. They said it was designed for IMPACT velocitys of 2400--1700fps. I think it was realy ment for the 307 or larger game.
Like I said, my brother got two deer with the Speers. I recovered one, it was lodged in the rear leg bone right below the pelvis joint. The deer was shot almost perfectly straight on at 60yards. The bullet hit just left of the sturnum, spun around backwards, and went through the gut and stuck in the leg bone backwards. It did not expand at all, not even a little. I had those bullets cranking out of the NEF at 2200FPS IIRC.
We also lost one deer that I am sure my brother hit, it was a 40yard shot on a doe.
I would trust this bullet on Moose, but I am not so sure about deer.

I read an american forum that honestly tested Nosler 170 partitions and 150barnes XFN. The nosler beat out the barnes for penetration on the test medium. However the barnes bullet was fairly intact in comparison to the nosler. In another 30-30 related teat, a cast bullet of 185 flat nose gaschecked ( much like the 173 cast previously mentioned) actually out penetrated a regular 180 copper jacketed bullet out of a 30-06 rifle. The test did not state the make of the 180 grain jacketed bullet.

I think I'm going to try some of these for ####s and giggles. I have two rifles with ballard rifling that should be quite happy with these. With ~ 12 cent bullets and a pail of 3031 that gong at our club should be shaking in its boots if it knows what's good for it. :D

30 RNFP DLG BB 165 gr. .309 L $22.00 per 200 bullets

I'll keep an eye out for the 150 Sierra's for a good price for plinking too. Why not, one of my rifles at least loves them.

For hunting I'd probably lean towards the 170 Hornadays, which I had pondered even before hearing the good reports here, or maybe even give the Barnes 150s a go and see how they shoot. Lots of fun playing with the tudda tudda for cheap and they're sure easy to load for.....

I'd go 150 gr if it's jacketed, and 170 or heavier if it's cast. I don't understand why so many people have an attitude toward cast bullets - they pair nicely with the capabilities of a 30-30

........have tried all sorts of loads in my 1949 Win 94 .30wcf
The best shooting one is the good ol factory winchester 170 grain silvertip bought at Crappy Tire. Kinda takes the fun out of it!!

Are premium bullets like Partitions really needed for a 30/30?

The last 30/30 I loaded for liked 150gr Rem RNs, but I didn't shoot any game with them.
