Whats your accuracy load for 45-70 from Marlin 1895

This may help answer your question abut plain base or gas check.
I have the longer barrelled Marlin 1895, with the pistol grip, with a low power variable scope on it and wondered also about bullet type.
I loaded five rounds with 45 grains of IMR4895 with a gas check bullet and five rounds of the same loading, but flat base bullet, all weighing 420 grains.
At 100 metres I fired the five gas check and marked a circle around each hit. Then I fired the five plain base at the same target. One flat base made a double on the bottom circle.
The ten shots made a 1 1/4 inch group, but in this case, the flat base was slightly better, going under the inch.

My latest favorite load is the 325gr. WFN GC "hammer" with 59 grs. of RL-7, hits hard but haven't tried it on game yet.
This may change when i get my new 330gr. "Improved Gould" mold, it's a Gas check bullet with a much larger Hollow pt. then the original, and I'll try it with the same 59 grain charge.

Well the old(100year old) Gould Hollow pt. is kinda famous for use on deer, it's Lyman's 457122, and drops kinda narrow. I have taken a few deer with it and it works as good or better then any other .45 cal. bullet (on deer). Now I'm waiting for a gas check copy, that drops at .462" and has a huge hollow pt. cavity. My 59 gr. charge of RL-7 could push this to 2300fps, just don't hit the deer anywhere that you plan to eat!
