what's your favorite 22LR ammo? worst?

Best for gophers-Winchester Super X Power Points

Best for targets-SK Standard Plus or Rifle Match

Worst accuracy-Remington "Target" worse accuracy then Federal standard velocity blue box at 50 meters.
And IMHO, that newer Remington-Eley ammo is theft of your cash for mediocre results!

In my Marlin 795 (all are hollowpoint, in order of accuracy from a bench rest):

- Remington Cyclone - most accurate (<1" groups), but dirty. First 150 rounds have been 100% reliable.
- American Eagle (red box) - almost as accurate as Cyclone, fairly clean. Unfortunately I can't find any beyond the 40 round test box I had.
- Winchester Super X (the 50 packs of 38 grain HP) - 3rd most accurate, clean and reliable.
- CCI Mini Mags - mediocre accuracy (e.g. 2"+ versus less than 1" for the Cyclone or AE), fairly clean, reliable, pricey.
- Federal Champion - crap, crap, crap. 4"+ groups, and in 50 rounds I had 8 FTFeed, 3 FTFire, 3 Squib loads, 2 FTE. Unfortunately I have 3 bulk boxes of this. Might have to find a .22 that likes this stuff. I don't understand why people like this. Some of the bullets aren't even seated straight, and you can actually hear the difference in loading from one round to the next.

I own but haven't tried stingers, yellowjackets, Winchester 333 pack (which don't look anything like the Win Super X). Haven't been able to get ANY ammo locally, other than a $43 box of the Cyclone (which cost me $30 last summer, and cost my buddy in Vancouver $23...).

I've had three Marlin semi-auto's, and none of them have ever had trouble cycling anything. But for accuracy, my current 795 likes the Remington Yellow Jacket best of what I've tried, though there hasn't been a lot available for me to try since I bought it. I stay away from the cheaper/bulk Remington.

CCI has always been good for me. Federal bulk isn't bad for plinking, but I've never found it to be overly accurate or consistent.

I only keep two kinds of 22lr ammo stocked: CCI Quiet-22 and CCI Stingers.

The Quiet-22 are great for areas where noise is an issue since they're probably quieter then my 22 air rifle - quiet ammo makes for good neighbours. Though when it gets really cold out the accuracy suffers. They're a warm weather ammo only, IMO. Bolt-gun only since they don't cycle semis.

The Stingers have worked in everything and are pretty damn powerful, and cycle every drum mag I've ever owned the best out of anything. Kinda pricey though.

Wow, it must be summer and people have time to get out and do some shooting to get there ya-yas out... In the winter when everyone is cooped up and grumpy, "Best ammo for..." discussions are WAY more heated and mean...

For my savage BV is CCI SV and green tags, just picked up som sk standard plus, my 1022 loves 555/333, though I have gotten the odd bad box. Hates federal blue box and American eagle.

Bottom line anything CCI works in both flawlessly,

Looking for a good hunting round for my BV that will come close to the accuracy of CCI SV, haven't tried stingers or mini mags, as it doesn't like switching ammo types

i have some DND 22 solid point ammo ,,.. i recieved 5 bricks of them..they are millitary spec and the best ammo that i have put through my vtr so far..i dont like the cheap hollow point ammo as they do not have enough gas in them to cycle my semi auto properly..

CCI and Federal are good as far as bulk ammo goes. The exotic ones I've used are Eley, Midas and RWS.
Ones to avoid are Remington and Winchester. My experience with AR Tactical by CCI has been good in a bolt action, not so good in a semi.

speaking of 10/22's and gophers in general.
winchester 333 or 555 work fine for me for gophers, not the most accurate, but great performance up to 75 - 100 yds.
My guns are very accurate with remington subsonics.
I don't like federal blue box (hp is not effective, too many crawl aways)
also don't like winchester 36 gr. HV HP. (white box bulk) which are more accurate than the 333's but as they gum everything up till it jams up.

I use blazers I find it is very rare to get any kind of jam. I was at the range and let another fellow try my pistol it was jamming 2-3 times every mag. I said it must have gotten dirty but he said no I am using my own ammo instead of yours I didn`t see what it was but it sure made a big difference. I have used american eagle in the red box it seems to jam a bit in my 10/22 but not so much that I would n `t use it. I also find blazers run a little cleaner.

for my semi-autos bulk packs - Federal and Blazer
for my bolt guns - SK (Lapua), Eley, CCI standard

I haven't liked the inconsistency/accuracy of Win super-X/T22/target or anything Remington other then the CBee/subsonics

Everything CCI makes is imo the best bang for the buck right now. Quality stuff, alot of choice and the ammo boxes are really well made.

I had 2 precision bolt action .22lr rifles and both liked CCI subsonic, Standard and Green Tag and the accuracy was almost as good as really expensive, exotic stuff like Eleys.

The worse, from my personal experience, I would say Remington... Thunderbolt is really dirty stuff to shoot. Rem Target stink like _ _ _ _ ! I usually avoid Rem...for rimfire ammo.

Funny,,i hear lots of people saying remington thunderbolts are junk,,,my guns love it,,my better 22 target guns will group pretty tight with it,,i usually buy it by the 5000 round case,,,mind you,,i buy bricks,,,NOT bulk loose boxed,,,i also bought about 5000 rounds of winchester various boxes,,all worked well,,even in my semi's,,,grant you the quality of my old 22's are much better than todays 22's,,,i still keep about 4000 rounds of CCI mini-mags and 2000 rounds of stingers for special occasions,,as it really is a much better round,,,just not needed for fun times,,,even my GSG 1911 22 runs flawlessly with thundebolts,,,,different guns like different ammo,,,you have to find what yours likes,,,both my 10/22's are a bit finiky about ammo,,they stay at the back of the safe now,,,my old Mossbergs are FANTASTIC compared to todays stuff,,,even my Remington Nylon gun run great on thunderbolts...and if they are so dirty,,my Nylon 66's have ate about 10,000 rounds and i STILL have never cleaned it,,,LOL..

Cci quiet, mini mags for my badger. Both are reliable and consistent. Federal bulk for my gevarm semi's.
I also use remington viper and yellowjacket for gophers if I can't get cci. I find it's just as consistent and hits hard but has a few ftf per box and is dirtier.

I avoid super x, it's dirty, inconsistent and has very poor terminal performance- I have shot raccoons and skunks 5-8 times at 60 yds and just kept wounding them compared to just 1 mini mag and it drops and twitches right there.
