whats your favorite caliber?

Like my grand Kids . . . the one I'm with at the time!

After that I am prone to my .280 Remington with the .260 Remington pretty close. The .260 and I have not had the time to develop the same closeness.

Okay, I'll play....

.22 lr for rimfire.

.45 ACP for handgun

.30-30 for centerfire lever rifles

Toss up between .30-06 Springfield & .308 Win for centerfire bolt rifles.

NAA.

375. I like the 375 H&H, but the 375 Ruger seems just as good (although I haven't drank Gatehouse's coolaid yet).

You said you wanted general purpose, and this will literally do it all.

My favorite is the .270 win.It will cover all big game hunting in my neck of the woods and do so accurately. For the brush,i like the .300 savage.

I have been using a 270/300WM interchangeably for years with good effect. Lately, for stand hunting, I like the 444 with it's DRT effect on deer.

What is it for?
better try differents calibers before buying,
there is a lot of difference between a 223 and a 338,
choosing and buying a gun should be looked like getting a new girlfriend,
it has to fit your need.
personnally i love 300 win magnum , stainless, flutted barrel.
don't forget a good scope, think $$$$$

Buy the one you can get ammo for in all the liitle towns around, buy it with. Iron sights as it sounds like it might do a lot of traveling and bouncing around. For a scope put a leupold on it.(they have excellent warranty) Make sure it has a compartment in the stock where you can keep ammo. I like magazine guns as they are obviously fast to load and unload which is what you will want for a tractor gun, that compartment in the stock might come in handy for when you forget the magazine A good lever 30-30 or bolt 30-06 will be hard to beat I. Your situation. I don't own either.
