Ok folks, for our first installment of What's Your Favorite Recipe, we have a couple of fairly well known contenders matched up with a relative newcomer. The rules are simple, if you have a good load for the chosen combination, post it. The most accurate load (tested in my rifle) will be the winner.

So, getting down to brass tacks, and the real reason for this post, who has a good load for my .308? I've got some Sierra 155gr PMK's #2156, and some Varget, and some IMR 4064, Fed 210m primers, and Hornady match brass, coming out of a 20" barrel. Any takers?

This is the exact question I'd like answered as I'm in the same boat. Look forward to finding out the answers myself, but I'm going to start with the same 45 gr. Varget charge that I use with my 175 MK's and see what happens. The 175'ers come out at 2675 fps in the 20" barrel, hoping to hit close to the 2900 fps mark with the 155'ers.

Winchster brass
Winchester primer
165 gr Hornady SST
45.0gr IMR 4895 powder
COL 2.795
2750 fps into 3/4" from my M14, and also shoots great in Rem 600 and Rem 742.

Stopped looking at other loads for M14...

I realize that, I do plan on working up the load so as to be safe in MY rifle. I was simply looking for a good starting point for this bullet and powder combination, as I can't find any load info for these bullets. Would load data for the 155 SMK work as a starting point? Or as was said above, use data from the 175's as the length of the bullet is very close?

+1 to sunray. The idea is a nice one, but it just won't work. Every rifle is unique.

The chances that a specific load that works wonders in one gun will be the best load in another are very low. There are loads that are often "pretty good" in many guns, but case, primer, powder type, bullet type, bullet weight, powder charge, COL, chamber dimensions, barrel idiosyncracies, loading procedures, moon phases and my wife's hormone levels (and there are others) are all variables that can change the results.

You may get good places to start looking, but that's about it.

Start with what you have and 42.0 gr. Varget.....increase in small increments.
 
Get the Sierra loading manual. It's all in there.
As Sunray pointed, never use others loads, only take sourceable datas (like from the manual of the bullets manufacturer....).

Bullets / Loads are not interchangeable. A lighter bullet will generally command the use of more powder than a heavy one. But stay tuned to your manual.
 
These are hunting loads:

150 grain accubond, WW brass, 47 grains Varget, cci 200 primers, oal 2.81 inch, 2760 fps from 20 inch BBL tikka 308. Very accurate.


165 grain Hornady BTSP, RP brass, 46 grains Varget, cci 200 primers, oal 2.81 inch, 2650 fps from 20 inch BBL tikka 308. Very, very accurate.

Accurate 308 loads abound. There are a lot of different powders and bullets to choose from.
 
If you are shooting a Savage chambered in .308, 44gr-44.5gr Varget, 168gr Nosler Match, 168gr Hornady hpbt. I have used Win brass, Rem, and using Norma at the moment. Made no difference in this Cal.The chamber on The Savage .308 is very tight and very consistent from gun to gun. I have 3 Savage rifles in model 12 and 10. All 3 measured 2.815-2.820.
