I recently purchased a Savage Mark II BV.

I started using Remington Target amunition which was just a bit more $ than just the standard cheep stuff. While at the range with a friend of mine I used his cheeper Remington brand and I was getting better results at 50 yards.

I am just curious what other people are using, and why? I am thinking if I should switch to something thats better before I break the gun in? I am new to this sport so any information would be appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance.

Each rimfire will have it's own preference.

Buy as many different brands of ammo as you can find and head out to the range with a bunch of targets and find out which it prefers.

For some reson my five .22's all like different and expensive brands of ammo.

American Eagle 38gr HV and CCI Mini mags both produce the best accuracy in my 22. I'll buy whatever is the cheaper of the two.

As said above, try a box of every type of ammo you can find and see what it shoots the best. Also, give it a number of shots before you judge the ammo. It may take a few shots to condition the barrel to that brand of ammo. Something happens when I switch ammo's in my 22 and it takes a few shots to get it grouping again. Cleaning the barrel between swaps might help, but it will then take a few shots to get the barrel conditioned again.

My Ruger 10/22 eats Winchester Wildcat and Eley Target rifle ammo the best. Dime sized groups at 45-50 yards.....

But I think I spent 7 hours and 15 different kinds of ammo before I figured that out....

Blazers, Wild Cats, Thunderbolt, Supreme, Dynapoints, Federal, Win Shorts are all no problem.

My 22's likes anything but hollow points.

I shoot CCI Stingers almost exclusively, but I use my 22 for mainly shooting gophers. Obviously Stingers probably aren't going to be the best choice for punching paper though. It depends on what you want to use your rifle for, but I find my self using CCI almost all the time.

As has been said already, 22 rimfires tend to be ammo-specific. Even a lot number change can bring different results. That being said, a very accurate rimfire will generally show a preference for one or two ammos, and still shoot very well with several others. A more cosmopolitan rimfire may shoot most regular ammo acceptably, but will still show a preference for some runs of ammo. There is a reason you never see inexpensive rimfire ammo at a rimfire benchrest match. Regards, Eagleye.

For mass blasting... Federal Value-Pack stuff (500rnds'ish loosely packed)

For more oomph in the .22lr... CCI Velocitors!

I buy whatever is in bulk and has copper on it. Too messy loading a the ruger magazines with just plain lead.

I have been buying the 525 pack of Federal something or other (blue box, think it is Champion) from Canadian Tire.

Each of my rimfires has had it's own preference, but the most consistently good/accurate ammo has been Winchester DynaPoints. I have not owned a 22 yet that wouldn't shoot at least reasonably well with it (though, by the same token, I've never owned a 22 that shot it's absolute best with it either). Winchester PowerPoint's also seem to work fairly well in all my guns (it is the el-supremo accurate ammo for my CZ, actually - all shots touching at 50M so often that I assume it's my fault when they're not). Most high-dollar target ammo is also at least vaguely accurate.

Other than that, I find it's really hit or miss depending on the gun. Grab a box (or better yet a brick) of each different kind of ammo you can lay hands on locally, go down to the range, and pound paper till you figure the gun out. :)

CCI Mini-mags, Sub-sonics, Velocitors and Stringers.
I buy bricks of whatever I can find though. Since no one is selling bricks or cases of any CCI on PEI, I'm limited to 50 or 100rd boxes.

For metal shooting, plinking and varminting:
American Eagle, 40 grain solids for rifles. 38 grain copper hollow point Federal Eagle for the pistols.

For accuracy work, Lapua Super club and federal gold match (the Kimber doesn't shoot Lapua well but loves the Federal gold match).

It really does depend on the rifle. I tried to force my Kimber to like Lapua and Elley. It didn't shoot them very well. Then the $@#$@ rifle shot fantastically with federal Gold match. Also the 40 grain solid American Eagle was very good. Interestingly enough the Federal Gold and American eagle looked identical. Same bullet, same markings and everything. Also shot almost identically with the Federal shooting smaller more conistent groups. POI was the same for both. So match and varmint rounds are now selected for this rifle.
