400 yards on a whitetail is a long shot... most guys probably can't even see one that far. 4 hun on moose is very doable. The nature of the beast comes into play here too. A hit moose walks a short ways and lays down... if not pushed hard off the mark. Hit a whitetail wrong at 40 yards or 400 and your in for a bit of a walk.

In had to coach myself into breathing after that one, oh man, thanks for the ab workout.

Dhat's nuthin! I shoot 'em in the eye ways out past d'hat cus I has an Ultra Mag with a tasco 50 mm obojective and d'em TSXs make then go Bang Flop everee time.

Who's you kiddin' dere, boya! I as a'ways aims fer da earholes as it is da easest way to make da brain shots. Wit' ma 7.723 Lazerooni Bloodt'ursty Warchild, I use 125gr Beelistak Ti-ups, so as the trajictorees is flat as da earf, ya' know. Them boolits is'a movin' so dang fast, dae don' e'en exit, dey just goes 'POOF', insides da brain cavitee like. Awll the dang way out to half a mile I can hol' er dead on , I 'kin. I measured it wit' Pa's ol' chevy, I did.

It depends on the size of the animal, cartridge, load and situation/conditions. The fact that I virtually never use magnification is also a major factor.

With everything perfect, I'd take a shot at a standing moose at 250 yds - which is what I voted. I may crank a few at an animal I know to be wounded at longer ranges in the hopes of finishing it off. I wouldn't shoot at a moving deer at much more than 70 yds, and the faster it's going, the shorter the range.

except for wolf. I would take any shot under 1km at a wolf.

Or over!!

I set no distance rules.
To many variables, what gun, what caliber, weather, did I just climb a hill, what kind of a rest is available.
If I think the shot is feasable I pull up the gun & decide if I'm comfortable trying to make the shot or not.

Moosehunter, don;t worry so much about it.

by the time you're old enough to start shaving I'm sure your marksmanship will have improved

good one....:D

It all depends what I am hunting for. Moose where I hunt is usually less than 50yds. Deer country is 350yds. Coyotes and wolves, well, I like "gth" theory...anything under 1km.

Where I hunt, its usually within 100 yrds. I'd confidently shoot out to 300, in some places you're looking down into a valley and 500's doable.

I agree with anything much over 300 being hard to see; in bright ideal conditions yes, but if you're in any heavy bush and the lighting's less than ideal it'd be hard. However, as long as I know what's behind the target I'd take a shot out to 500.. That's with my '06. LR

I was going to refrain from answering this question, but since most of the blokes here are firing their shots about two bar-stools up from me, here goes............as close as I bloody well can so as to not lose the game !
