Been some years now, but i shot a doe across the end of the lake. It cam out on a point, roughly half way across the end. I knew the lake width from the top sheet, as I'd been practicing on a target on the far shore at 600 yards. (Doing poorly I might add)
The rifle, a 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser, with issue sights, was On at 300, without moving up the sight ladder. She dropped on the first shot.
That old Mauser is a very accurate rifle, but, my 600 yard shooting revealed that it is no long range number. I think the 300 yard shot was about it's limit. I had practiced at 400, in an old gravel pit, but it was no hell there either.
At 300 it would generally hold within six inches.
Today, I find the sights hard to see. Getting old sucks.
