What's the longest successful shot you've made on a deer - and what did you use?

For me, it's over 150yds with my Marlin 336 30-30 and about 10 minutes of legal light left on the last day of the season. It dropped right where it stood!

I had the gun sighted in for 100yds and felt very comfortable taking this shot.

long shot

It was a 8 point buck at 275 yards with a 270 Win in a model 70, with a 3x9 scope lIt was a good shot, double lung. I did however steady the gun against a tree.
 
The buck that produced the antlers shown in my avatar was taken at 180 yards with a .270 bolt action as it galloped across a beaver dam. I had a solid rest and I fired twice, but the deer never missed a step before it disappeared into the woods on the other side of the pond. I found the deer 60 yards into the woods with 2 holes in it, 2 inches apart, behind the shoulder. All of my other deer have been 60 yards or less.
 
387 yards measured by Leica rangefinder. From my treestand sitting with elbows on knees and tree branch. Large doe to fill my extra antlerless only tag in area 82A. Sako AII in 25/284 with 115 nosler partition at 3050 fps sighted in for 3.5inches high at 100 yards.Two shots broadside first one through the back of the lungs and liver, deer hunched up and took jumps and stopped. Second shot through forward part of lungs and deer dropped like a stone. I always keep shooting till they hit the ground :)
 
Two shots on two deer during the last hour of the season 3 years ago to fill two tags on a pair of fawns moving together. First was 580 yards and the second was just over 600. Both animals moved less than 50 yards before expiring. .280 Rem. but I forget the actual round I was using.

Caveat: THERE WAS NO WIND AND I HAD SHOT AT THIS RANGE BEFORE. HAD THERE EVEN BEEN A BREATH OF IT I WOULD NOT HAVE ATTEMPTED THE SHOT.
 
My longest shot was on a pronghorn antelope, not a deer. I dropped it with my 30-06 using a 150 gr Nosler Solid Base at 375 paces, which with my short legs would probably be about 350 yards.
 
532 yards (known distance, calculated previous to setting up treestand) Farm country Whitetail. 7mmSTW, 140 grain Partition @3550. 1 shot, double-lung kill. He ran a tight little circle and collapsed. Scored 159 4/8 net. Had a shooting platform with bags on it, so steady hold was no problem. I was sighted in 3" high at 100, and point of impact was 20" below crosswire center. Regards, Eagleye
 
About 220 yards with a 300 WSM 150 gr Federal hit a little low deer went down 60 yards from wher it was shot.

And really, who gives a phuck what 'measured' the distance. Bushnell rangefinders will pick up 500m just as well as Leica's will.

150m on a fawn. I have never understood why people have to shoot deer from more than 200m. They're not all that hard to sneak up on....

My true longest was 175m on a big bull moose with my old iron sighted 303brit at 12yrs of age. First and longest. It's never occurred to me to shoot more than 200m. If they're that far away, I can get closer.

Last year a buddy and I made both of out longest shots. I made up an air photo to brag to some other guys who had hunted the same spot. Hopefully I can find it....

We showed up a few hours late that morning. Our hunting partners had already been out doing the old spot and stalk by the time we got there. They hadn't seen a thing. We had been there the weekend before with no luck either.

We park the truck and start getting geared up. Across the valley I spot about half a dozen whitetails. They're a LONG way out with no cover in between us. They hadn't seen us yet so we stalked up as close as we could before going down a steep hill. We set up prone with bypods and took our shots.

Took me two shots, first one high, second dropped her. My buddy (Adam in the photo) took one shot and dropped another doe. Mine ended up being 375m (410yrds), his was a little shorter.

Were our partners ever pissed at us when they heard the shots! I used 7mm RM, 154gr Interbond and Adam was using an old .308, 150gr WIn PP.

Found the photo: It was a fun getting the deer back to the truck....

Longest shot on deer verified with laser rangefinder was 434 yards.Longest shot on pronghorn verified with laser rangefinder 480 yards.Both shots taken with 7mmstw using 140gr ballistic tip at 3500fps.Both shots taken from solid rests,with almost no wind.
 
About 250 meters with the 7mm Rem Mag in Tracey N.B., sitting on the powerline... Nice 9pt that now "lives" on my wall...

The distance is a guess, but the powerline towers are about 330 meters apart and the buck was roughly 3/4 of the way to the next tower...

12ga. with 3" copper solid sabot. I marched off about 130 good sized paces because the guys in my group asked me to. I realize that's not the most precise way to measure, and the terrain wasn't flat. My best guess is a little over 100 yds.. The buck had just emerged from the woods into a corn field and had just started to bolt across the field. I caught him in mid stride (broad side) running from right to left, he fell like a tonne of bricks ass over tea kettle and never got back up. It was like watching a plane nose into the ground.

That was three years ago, and the beauty is that the story gets longer and longer every year we reminisce with the group the sunday before the season starts, while we're watching football and having a few drinks. I can't wait for this year, I'll probably be able to stretch the distance to 200 paces :D

I guess you should recognize BS when you see it! :D You have obviously never hunted Whitetail Bucks that have been hunted hard and are not in the rut. To "Sneak" up on one would be some feat Indeed. Now if you had a strategic post, (Tree stand) you might get a closer shot, but they become very wary, and you will only see them in the first ½ hr of daylight and the last ½ hr. Not much "sneaking" time. That is why some longer shots are taken, simply very difficult to get closer. Hard hunted Elk are similar, but not so sensitive to noise, especially when one knows how to work the cow call. Regards, Eagleye.

I have 2 deer (1x6pts and 1x4pts) early morning at +- 500ft with my .303Brit 180gr CoreLokt, broadside shots, pass trough :).

1 nice buck at close to 225yds, 8pts (19 3/4in spread) and around 225-240lbs alive, in the last minute of legal hunting, 308Win 165gr Nosler BallisticTip, quartering away :D.

1 9pts early morning in corn field. There were 4 bucks in the field that morning with 6 does, I just had to pick one and get closer, they were at first at around 500yds. Shot at 275yds with 140gr Nosler BallisticTip out of my Tikka 7MMRM, kneeling after ramping in the freshly cut corn for 150yds.

All these were shot while field hunting, beside these, all others of my deer were shot close range (40ft-150ft) in the bush.

My first moose was a cow shot at +- 850ft late day past a beaver dam in a sturdy watch. Tikka 7MMRM 160gr Nosler Accubond. My other moose (buck) was shot at 40ft also late day in a clear cut with the same rig, you just never know what to expect, everything is possible.
 
I've never had a long shot on a whitetail. Of all of them I've shot, the longest would be about 80 yards or so.
