bought the gun and I am looking at the howa axiom stock but i don't know if my gun is a short or long action. thanks in advance.

I thought all weatherby vanguards were a long action receiver and used block/spacers for the short action cartridges?

Wrong.

I have Vanguards in both long and short action.

What you may be thinking of is that there is only one size of short action. This short action supports the 300WSM, 308, 223 etc. Since the 223 is so much shorter than the 300WSM for example, there is a tiny spacer in the magazine. Nothing huge though and the action is shorter than the full length action.

I can provide pictures if you want.

No pictures required as I was not challenging. And your explanation makes sense as when I was looking for a new .223 or .204, I took a long look at the vanguard sub-MOA in .223 as it was a great deal but am not a fan of "fillers" in actions and they did not have a standard action to compare to. Thank you for clearing it up.
