Hello,

I was wondering what the going price is for wheel weights in the GTA? I have had a hard time finding shops that are willing to part with them for a reasonable price and most of the scrapers will not sell them. :mad:

I have been able to find a shop in Ajax that has a few thousand pounds of them and they are asking $.50/lb.

What do you guys think?
 
our scrap dealer in nova scotia wants forty cents a pound they pay twenty cents for them.I'm not that hard up for lead yet but i can see it becoming a problem,California has already banned lead ww and my main source was going to a meeting a couple weeks ago to discuss switching to all steel/zinc.
 
Scrap lead was almost 1$ a lbs yesterday. So most scrappers will pay .40 - .50cents a lbs.

So offer more then that :)
 
Some are, composite, watch out!, or aluminium. You can feel the difference, they are lighter.
 
If I had to pay $0.50 a lb in the city for mostly lead weights I probably would. Take a look at Alchemy castings pricing for "new" lead. Theirs of course is already clean and good to go in ingots of course.
 
A case of Very Cold Beer, to the smaller shops, on a hot Friday afternoon, with some buckets and a respectfull friendly demeanor ..... has worked well.
Over 500 lb's so far .... never paid more than $0.20 per.
Sometimes it's the second try that pays off.
 
Well I am not in Toronto ( interior of BC), but when I was collecting wheel weights to make shot for my traps loads I payed a lot less than .40 cents a pound ( about 3 years ago). I asked around and found one small tire shop who sold me a large 5 gal pail for $20 regardless of the weight. I would pick up about 150 lbs a month from them.
Then out of the blue a mechanic from the FORD dealership contacted me and said if you take them away they are yours. These guys just didn't want to deal with the left over weights. Now I wouldn't get as much from FORD as the tire shop but still I usually got about 100lbs every so often and I would bring them some beer as a thank you.
It took a little road work but I am sure you can get weights for less. I no longer shoot trap and I gave my connections to a friend who is still getting the weights for the same price to this day.

As a shop owner, I will agree this approach is a good one.
I have never charged anyone for them, I always ask what they are being used for, before letting on that I have any. Bullet casting, well come on back and we'll see what we have for ya.:D
Always give mine away to reloaders.
 
The times of "free" w-w are about over. IMHO 50c/lb is great price comparred to spot market price of $1/lb and rising....Soon when forced to buy from retailers, adding the antimony, tin (W-W equivalent), HST, shipping, "green tax"(?) and so on I dont preclude future price in the $3/lb neighborhood or more....
 
Last summer, I got a bunch for 25 cents/lb from a scrap dealer. I jumped all over that and bought everything he had. I've paid up to 75 cents/lb for them though. Lead wheel weights are getting rarer and rarer. If you can get them for 50 cent/lb, that's a fair price. I don't think any of the auto manufacturers are sending out any of their new cars with lead weights on them. Get them while you can. I could see this coming, and did my last big melt last summer. I've got just over 1 ton of bullet lead, in ingot from, in my garage now. I think that should do me until I'm taking my long dirt nap. :)
 
That's a decent price, but also factor in that some percentage of them will probably be zinc or iron. In the last batch of scrap ww i bought 25% of them were zinc and iron wheel weights mixed in with the lead ww.
