So, I had to cut my losses and realise I simply wouldn't spend any money purchasing A Magazine for the ABOLT 30.06 as much as I liked it, being Left hand and all..... I had to advertise it as Cheap gun NO MAG...
Intentions were to pass on to a young fella who was keen... An they just had to find the magazine.
Local lad got onto me eventually, Came an test fired it to be sure he could "handle it", he must be 15 or so..
Anyway, He is Keen as a bean and I've sold my 20 inch ABOLT lefty....

I also sourced him a Magazine from Sydney for $150.... So a bit better than expected at $190rrp.
He will be set now- also sold him my old Burris scope..

So now I'm moving on.... And Here's the Plan of attacks.


So as it comes, i will update this thread an show yas what Im putting together!
So stand by and See where it goes!!

i kind of tried that, an i can say im a bow shooting fan, but the sambar , without lengthy sit an waits, is difficult by bow!

so il stand back an poke em!... with a nice little walk aboutrifle

Went bear hunting up the Gold River area up near the Roger's Pass. Seen a couple real bruisers but just couldn't quite get into shooting position quick enough. It's big country, we put 180kms on the quads, after parking the truck at the 56 km. Hopefully the pics and videos come through.

The Lady also likes the feel and overall compactness... Even holding it up with 1 hand / pistol grip style 😲😲

It has Leupold rings but may change them out for a Lower set of weaver style bases and Leupold rifleman rings.... See how the scope feels.


It's going to give the Kimber a run for its money ?? Cannot wait to Compare tonight
 
Model 7s can be very tricky to get shooting well, mostly because of those "pencil thin barrels"

I've had a several over the years and none of them liked off the shelf ammunition.

The best one was chambered for the 7-08 and it would only shoot one brand, with 139 grain bullets well.

The others were also incredibly fussy, no matter new triggers, bedding jobs, etc.

Two of them started life as SPS versions, with composite stocks, those were nightmares which changed with weather conditions.

All of them ended up shooting well enough to be reliable from a cold barrel, but usually only with one bullet design/weight/make and a proprietary load in one manufacturer's cases. That could likely have changed with a lot more trial and error development, but once you've found something that works in these rifles, it's time to stop and use it.

The 7-08 ended up with a Tech trigger, McMillan stock and a new barrel, which was the same length as the original but heavier.

The heavier barrel was much less fussy and helped a lot with off hand shots, it also wasn't as fussy and would consistently well, shoot various weights, designs of 7 mm bullets from 120 to 154 grain, with only minimal load development

I really like Remington rifle/shotgun platforms and have several on hand. If they have issues, they're relatively easy to fix, etc.

I'm not saying there aren't Model Sevens out there that don't shoot well, but if you're cash strapped and purchase whatever bullets are on sale or available, and have to work up loads on a regular basis, the Model 7s will really limit your choices. I've owned them chambered for 22-250, 243 win, 7-08, 308 win, and 7mmSAUM.

The factory 7-08 was an odd rifle, right from the start, it would shoot two bullets close enough to point of aim, right out to 250 yards, 95% of the time. The first shot was consistently predictable. That 5% always nibbled at the back of my mind on a hunt. It had a deep, on max diameter throat, which is bad news on any rifle. It didn't help that I couldn't seat the bullets further out, because of the short mag, so it got a new, heavier barrel.

My new daughter in law has it now and you couldn't pry it from her cold dead hands.

Now we get to the Kimbers. The Kimber action has a lot of similarities to the Remington, other than it is a lot lighter, which allows them to put a bit more metal in the barrel and still come in around six pounds (2.75kg), unloaded, without scope, and still shoot acceptably well without much fuss.

I presently own two. One, Model 84L, is factory chambered for the 270 Winchester and it shoots the present handloads, under all conditions in 1 inch or less groups. The "L" is for long, not light and it has a lovely tiger stripe Walnut, factory fitted stock, which didn't need bedding.

The other is a Model 84 M, with a custom barrel, chambered for the 7-08. I picked it up on a trade and just couldn't part with it, after shooting it, "just to see how it shoots"

It shoots everything it's fed well. Factory or handloads. Of course it shoots different factory loads and hand loads to different points of aim, but once it's scope is dialed in for the particular lot of ammo, all is well.

It has a factory composite stock, with a pebbled texture and is very light. Whoever tuned the trigger was a master at such things. It's got a factory trigger, which has been tuned to break right on 2 pounds, and no matter how hard I slam the butt on the floor, that sear stays set.

Both of these rifles wear decent glass, as in Leupold on the 270 and a Tract on the 7-08. Both are 3.5-10x40mm with 30mm tubes.

Both scopes came out of estates or I wouldn't have been able to afford them.


Whelanlad, you seem to be cash strapped as your posts indicate from searches for competitively priced components and gear. If my assumption is correct, I'm predicting that if you purchase the Model 7 Rem, you're going to become quickly perplexed by it's finicky nature, unless you get very lucky.
 
BH im going to read this in full shortly but its funny you mention it may be finicky!

this bloke has given me some ammos, most half shot boxes... 150gr, 180gr and 130gr..... so i can assume he has had some unsatisfactory results per say----
barrel is pencil thin!

i see a issue already with the receiver Lips? when cycling a round from the Mag, its giving the Cases quite a scratch up!?!?
what could be done here i am questioning? light sanding with a fine emry ?

Not super brand new, shows sign of light rising here or there on that typical rem finish! Oiled up and going to clean it up an lube it all up again

its doing a hair under 2 inch with Corelokt Factory 150s and Federal 130s.......
sprayed some 180s but the scope rings needed a nip up early on so im not sure if it disliked the 180s or didnt mind them...

was nice to pull the trigger on it a bunch of times today--

staying with 2 shot groups an keepin the barrel fairly cold/ cool between shots for now, will Start reloading the 165gr Speers next week when they Arrive and see what it does with them--

the brass scratchin is still evident but no where near as deep as before so maybe it will iron out a bit now with some solid use.

other than that--- 3kg scoped. its set to be a good Daily / go to for Stalking Sambar...
dont think it will replace the kimber for back pack hunting though... ( km84 = 2.75kg scoped :) )

definatly a lively critter after the shot but felt quite good to shoot with the Super cell recoil pad.

no major concerns thus far in..... but can see why old mate sold it with a few half boxes of ammo lol
 
After using up the factory Ammo, it seems to be a 1.75-2 inch Gun with the 180 and 150 gr Corlokt factory.
More consultant with the 150gr so far
An seemed to group the 130gr federals better but I havnt been back to test them for consistency .

The 180gr groups (2 shot strings) seemed more consistent today after the Barrel Taped for Harmonics ...
But I would like to test this more with just a Couple of Wraps at the Muzzle end first, then add the Middle band...

Alas, I'll be reloading for this next week.. an this is where I hear the group's often tighten up (as do most)

Even so, if I can get them to be consistently 1.5 inch or better, I'll leave it at that.

What I've got to play with are--

130gr Woodleigh PPSN
150gr SST
150gr Speer Hotcor
180gr BTSP
180gr SST

and will have 165gr Hot cors.

Thinking for the short term i will load some 180gr BTSP and some 130gr Woodleighs to see what happens from there.

only got Varget -- my go to aswell.

Also the Trigger does suck as per Internet talk.... fairly heavy :)

Very consistantly 2 inch groups for 2x shots.......... letting it cool etc.

this is with

47gr varget 130gr ppsn @ 68mm (cannelure)
45gr Varget 150gr SST @70mm (cannelure)
42gr varget 180gr BTSP @ 69mm (cannelure) AND 70mm COAL......... Shot "tightest" 1.75 inch..

**Loads were Tested with said Tape on forend and muzzle area of barrel... tape on only muzzle end produced better results- but marginally.

All i got out of it was that a longer COAL might be the ticket? staying within magazine length may only allow the 150 an 180gr to be 1mm longer----an with 130gr PPSN will be 1mm as the PPSN base is short below Cannelure....
