Does anyone have any real world chronograph readings for a 20" barreled 35 Whelen?
I want a short stainless bolt gun with synthetic gear in a 35 cal. Just can't decide if burning extra powder is worth it just to keep the same action and case as my 25/06 an 30/06 or if I should just go with the 358 Winchester and forget about the 250 gr bullets. The Winchester is better in shorter barrels but longer bullets eat up case volume

So Whelen vs Winchester in the 20" barrel?

I just picked up a Handi-rifle in 35 Whelen this summer to have some fun with. I hope to use it hunting this season and give the 7mmMag a rest. It has a 22" barrel but unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to chrono it yet.

Either/or will work fine. 250s will work fine in a 358 as well and the 358 might be a bit more civilized with 200s for deer hunting.

Also ......... It's hard to make 35Whelen brass from 308 brass too.

I really thought about the 350 rm. It's easy to find a savage action with a standard bolt face. I want this to be a beat around gun for crappy weather that will handle moose and bears. Xmas bonus is coming up and that should cover a pre fit barrel

With a little shopping you will find a Ruger M77 in .350 RM.

There was a nice M77 RS in 35Whelen on the EE yesterday. Sold quick. Those are nice rifles, esp with the sights for extra FUDD!

I've got a couple guns tucked away with fuddish features that might have got you excited, so I got out my bedazzler and blinged them up a little... now they sparkle when the sunlight hits them just right...

How about a 20 inch 9.3X57 with the 286 gr bullet?

Had Bevan King barrel me up a matched pair a long while back. Buddy of mine started calling it the 358 Winchester Magnum after seeing how it performed on game. :)

I missed the Whelen. It must have gone fast! However I want I nice light short gun that packs a punch.
The 9.3/57 is nice. Been watching trade ex a lot but think ill go with a 35

I once owned a Model Seven re-tubed in 358Win. Something like that would be perfect for your needs.

Mine went back to it's original owner who repented selling it and desired it back. Must be something done right when you buy guns back.

They don't fit me at all unfortunately

What doesn't fit you??? The stock??? That is a quicker and less expensive fix than the rebarrel you are talking about... just restock the gun and make whatever adjustments for fit that are required. Personally would far rather an M77 action to the Savage.

Im all for the Whelen but im not sure if I would miss the extra powder that the case holds If I were using it for stalking big game an no excessive long shots... Im fairly sure I wouldn't and would still love the .35 thumper cartridge.

If you weren't building one, id look for the Ruger hawkeyes, mine has a 22 inch thin barrel (whelen) and the synthetic is very wet-weather-ready.

If you weren't looking to use the heavier projectile had you thought about the 338Fed to get some fps if thats what you are after?

I had used 225gr RN to good effect an plenty of thump.

good luck with ya .35 darn good things!

I'm just wanting a nice mid bore at modest velocity that will do as good on a moose at 250 yards as it will on a bear at 25 feet. I have bigger and smaller. I want a short gun that I can drag thru anything and any weather without worrying about scratching and denting it. Sort of a 1 gun does it all when the conditions get bad. My baikal double just doesn't range the ability for a further shot. If i build one for my exact purpose I won't regret using it the way it's intended. If i spend the same money on a better name factory gun I know I'll baby it. Hence stainless and synthetic and savage. My savage rifles have never let me down. I have weird processes I know

If you plan on building a short barreled rifle (20 inches or more) you will get around 200 fps more from the 35 Whelan than you will from the 358 Win with equal bullet weights. The 35 Whelan and the 350 Rem are ballistic twins but the 350 Rem will have at least one round LESS magazine capacity than the 35 Whelan. Also the 350 Rem cases cannot be made from cheap and readily available 30-06 brass . If you are a handloader I would suggest the 35 Whelan improved over the std Whelan. That would be your call. A 35 Whelan loaded with 225 gr TSX partition or accubond bullets is quite a stopper. Hope this helps
