Keeping it together is a must:D And on that note , I did it again on a big deer this year, he crossed a line I was watching early in the morning, and I had that stunned look at the horns moment , then when I put the gun up , his butt was all I saw exiting the clearing.
Point to note, make a loud burp, whistle , then put the gun up, or multi task yourself, and get it all done as you see the deer come into view. Its happened before , when will I learn.:D stop that deer , cause he may not.

Easier said than done, but I usually freeze and wait until I'm sure he doesn't know I'm there and is looking somewhere else. That approach is not without the risk of him running off with the gun on your knees though....
 
When buck are on a mission it’s sometimes hard to get them to stop. Yeah, you have to be quick on the draw. I’ve been fortunate on a few occasions and was able to predict what they would do. The last big buck I shot, I saw him coming for a ways and was able to place myself for a clear shot and predicted his every movement till I pulled the trigger and he fell on the ground at 60 yards. My nerves don’t go till the buck is down and then the shakes start...
 
I do NOT look at the antlers until the deer is down. I had a heck of a buck last year at fifteen yards, had the bow up, could have taken a low percentage shot but declined.............and he went nose for tail and outta there. He was in my kill zone for probably a full minute, maybe longer, and I have no idea how many points he had on his rack. Probably ten, but I was only looking for the shot. I never saw him again last season, but that was late December and I only hunted one more day.

He MIGHT have been the big buck I shot THIS year, but I will never know.........

I fully agree that stopping a deer with either a whistle, or a loud sharp yell, like whoa! Works, and works very well, even on deer with dogs right behind. Remembering to use it, when a buck is in front of you, well, that can be a tad difficult.
My doe this year was no issue, she came out to the logging road, and like a good deer, stopped to look both ways. She's in my freezer.
