In July of 2007 a friend and I were looking into becoming a Canadian distributor of Armscor AKA: Squires Bingham. The RCMP’s head of the FRT program, (Murray Smith), admitted that like the M1600; the MAK22 should not be prohibited as it IS NOT an AK47 variant!!!!!! When I asked why they wouldn’t amend it in the case of the M1600, he said “It’s a compensation issue because of those who turned them in” and that it was easier to leave it as is. I asked what if we imported the non-prohibited parts, (everything except the roll stamped AKM22 receiver), and assembled them with the receiver roll-stamped M1600. His answer was, “we would not look favourably upon that”.
