When did the first batch NorcM14 arrive?

Your friend had an M14 in his basement and he didn't know about it? That is funny. I believe there were many batches of M305 before the 2007 stamped ones. There were Norcs and Polytechs, dating as far back as 1980s.
 
I remember seeing the first ones around the late 1980's. Not sure about the exact first time, but that doesn't matter in your case. The first ones I saw had really nice blueing finish rather than parkerizing which prompted me to look at them. I remember cocking back the op rod and it fell out too easy at the notch. Hmmm, 1989?
They came with bayonet lugs too. Century Arms stamp might be on it also.

First Norinco M14

My first Norinco M14 came as a kit you had to put it together.
And the instructions came in chinglish.

The early ones had a black paint finish and I think they were serial numbered with AL######x I have one of the early ones. AL was for Allan Lever I believe.
