when does it become 'big bore'?

From a hunting point of view a big bore caliber is a caliber suitable
for elephant, rhino, lion, Cape bufalo and the like.

So I'd say 375 H&H magnum and up in bore diameter and energy...

I figure .375 caliber and up is a big bore on this side of the "pond".

I always thought it started at 9.3x62mm by their definition actually.

I think most responders here are getting mixed up between their personal definition of big bore,(which can be anything) and the actual def. of "big bore" from the Brit./African safari days when there was a definite description of bore sizes. It may have had something to do with game laws in dif. countries or it was just fact, and as one poster pointed out; Taylor would know them.....under .400=small bore.......400-.450=med. bore......over.450=large bore. Remember these guns/cals. were to be used on large, dangerous, African game, at close ranges, where some still preferred the 8 and 4bore guns for this work.

Guys, if you are only going to use diameter as the defining factor, the 44-40 becomes a big bore. It is after all, a rifle cartridge first. It was introduced to handguns later.
How about the 38-55? There are others as well.
