If I was a betting man, I’d bet on an electoral promise of this kind:
We banned the assault rifles like we promised ! Elect us and we’ll get rid of handguns in our streets because no one needs a handgun in Canada to take down a deer !

The reason for the firearms ban is this:
The real criminals, gang bangers, thugs, whatever you want to call them are NO THREAT to the government. So they are left alone, public safety is a non-issue.
Law abiding legal gun owners are a large group that tend to be patriotic and stand up for freedom and justice. They are not a danger to public safety BUT they could be a strong resistance to what a totalitarian government wants to do to our freedoms and rights.
Once you understand who is the enemy and why.....the picture is very clear.
Do not count on the police to be on our side.
Do not assume the judiciary will be unbiased.

What's with the old chonies BS? It is the young urbanite that is pressing for the handgun ban. My DIL has a hissy fit over an empty gun box for Cjhrist sake. Raised on the Island hates guns.
While generalities are often dangerous, most middle class urban folks have little connection to the gun community. My assessment is most are ambivalent about guns. Ask them if they support the ban and I suspect they would simply answer yes, not because they care one way or another, they just don't see an need because THEY don'y have a need for a firearm. Add a bit of fear into the equation like Trudeau and Blair do and you can get a another vote. The formula is pretty easy to understand.
Your question assumes our guns are gone. Hell the issues is hardly just got started. If the Conservatives get in and reverse the OIC the Liberals won't be back talking OIC again. They will have milked the subject dry. The Long Gun Registry got tossed, the Liberals moaned and groaned for a bit but have not gone that route again. Defeat this gun grab, and we will, and the issue will die for another decade or until another major shooting event takes place.
